disable including memory when taking snapshot

$

Is there a way to disable the ability to include memory when taking a snapshot or change the default (from checked to unchecked?) when the machine is powered on?

I've got users who love their snapshots but frequently include the memory when there's no need for it in their case. All those memory snaps are starting to add up to a significant amount of space and I want to change the default to not include memory or simply remove the memory option for certain groups. Is this possible?

Thanks

Licensing issue with vCenter server 6.0

I have installed vCenter server 6.0 by using VMware-VCSA-all-6.0.0-2414224.iso. I am able to login vCenter web client and also able to see registered vCenter server. However, when trying to add new host to the vCenter, it throws the error "License not available to perform the operation". Default, vmware provides 60 days trial license but I am can not see the evaluation license mode in licensing tab.

Does vCenter server 6.0 has 60 days trial license? Please kindly let me know where I will get more information on vCenter server 6.0.

Strange error vCenter 5.5 u2 ssolscli.cmd OperationFailed listServices and updateServices

$

Hi,

So here is my setup.  I recently migrated from vSphere 5.1 u1 to vSphere 5.5 u2 by way of building a new Windows 2012 R2 server, migrating the SSL directory from ProgramData, and creating and ODBC connection to the existing SQL 2012 DB (I did an upgrade of the DB as well).  This is try #2 - the first try was on a server that was named as the original, and then the old 5.1 server unjoined from the domain, this one joined etc.  In the end that was scrapped because as the time I had thought it was just something messed up with the install, the server etc.

This server was a fresh manual build of  Windows 2012 R2 (meaning I didn't deploy via a template etc).  Same issues.  The reason for upgrading this way is that I am running Citrix XenDesktop and it is a major hassle when using the MCS to allocate VM's to point to a new vSphere instance (it breaks it).

So, the install went perfect, and it was on to generating new certificates for the server, and having done this many times I tried it manual and also used the Derek Seaman vCenter 5.5 toolkit script to generate certs.  Then when moving into the Cert Automation tool, running ssl-updater.bat failed with java errors at the point where it should prompt for the admin password when replacing the SSO Certificate (same deal for inventory etc).  Why I cannot find a valid reason, so, I then moved on to a manual replacement.

To list the services:

ssolscli.cmd listServices https://blabla.local:7444/lookupservice/sdk

Intializing registration provider...

Getting SSL certificates for https://blabla.local:7444/lookupservice/sdk

General failure.

com.vmware.vim.sso.admin.exception.InternalError: General failure.

Return code is: OperationFailed

100

The thing is the Toolkit Script did create the sts gc and admin properties and _id files - how it acquired those numbers I have no idea though.

So I then tried to update the services - admin and gc worked!  Lastly I tried sts and (note thats not my weak password but my password currently does have a . and @ in it):

ssolscli.cmd updateService -d https://blabla.local:7444/lookupservice/sdk -u administrator@vsphere.local -p My@pass.w0rd -si c:\certs\vCenterSSO\sts_id -ip c:\certs\vCenterSSO\sts.properties

Intializing registration provider...

Getting SSL certificates for https://blabla.local:7444/lookupservice/sdk

General failure.

Return code is: ServiceNotResponding

2

Note I was at least able to change the web services cert so at least Xendesktop can see the cluster, but I need to get inventory, sso etc certificates replaced and I am at the end of my rope LOL

Any idea what could cause this would be appreciated.  Seeing that its the second server, one a custom windows template, and one a fresh manual setup, I doubt its anything build related.  I have found no one that has had these same issues (have been searching for 2 days!)

Thanks in advance!

NOTE: tried numerous other things like disabling ipv6, adding host entries, checking firewall logs, etc and the CA and Sub CA of these certs are trusted

I'm new to vMware, so right now I'm following a guid for the version I want to install. I'm not using the Database Express installation. Instead I have a Windows 2012 R2 Server with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 installed. The command above isn't working, I get the following error:

Msg 1803, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
The CREATE DATABASE statement failed. The primary file must be at least 5MB to accommodate a copy of the model database.

So I started googling and found this: VMware KB: Creating a SQL Server database for vCenter Server fails with the error: The primary file must be at least…

It didn't solve my problem.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?

All server are running on ESXi 5.1 host, in case that's relevant for my question.

Cloning Permissions - anybody?

I find it interesting that giving your VM admins the ability to snapshot a VM is a simple selection of a couple check boxes yet finding the right combination to allow them to clone a VM is ridiculous. I've seen a few discussions some KB articles on Converter perms but no cookbook on cloning perms short of giving them full administrator perms.

We are on 5.5 and I've cloned the virtualmachinepoweruser role and allowed a bunch of additional perms per the various discussions. Now I'm stuck at the attached screen selecting the datacenter.

Anybody know the combination?

Thanks

VSA Manager empty after vCenter Server Crash and install of a new one

Hi,

we had a crash of our vCenter Server and had to install a new one. Everything works fine but we can`t manage the VSA anymore. The VSA Manager is empty and there is no possibility to import the existing VSA-Cluster.

How can we manage the VSA at the new vCenter Server.

Thank you for your help.

Kind regards

Console over vCenter

Hi,

Could someone help me to provide steps to configure the comunication of MKV console to go through vCenter Server?

I know the standard comunication is:

Client ( vsphere or web ) -> vCenter  -> VM -> open console

Client <=======> ESX hosting VM

But I would like to have:

Client -> vCenter -> VM -> open console

Client <=======> vCenter <=======> ESX hosting VM

So it means, that all the comunication goes through vCenter, not directly to ESX hosting VM. I know that there will be a high load on vcenter, but it is no problem.

To understand:

-Client IP: 192.168.1.101 /24, gw .1

-vCenter 5.5 ( windows ) :

......VPN IP 192.168.2.10/24, gw .1

......Management LAN: 10.10.10.10/24 ( no gw )

-ESX 5.5 IP: 10.10.10.51/24 ( no gw or 0.0.0.0 )

no routing or direct connection between VPN network and ESX.

Thanks in advance for help.

Suggest that DNS is the problem.  I'm using a home router as my DNS server and it doesn't allow you to manually update DNS records.  How can I complete the install without changing my router?  There has to be a way to install vCenter Server without a dependency on DNS...

When to Separate vCenter and Single Sign on Server

$

With 5.1, I have the option to have the Single Sign on Server separate from vCenter Server.  When is this necessary and appropriate and when is it overkill?  If I am using vCOPS, VCD, and other components?  What are the factors that influence the decision to need to separate them such as:

-having many components in the environment needing authentication

-Having a heavly load of authentication traffic

-Other factors?

Thanks for your input.

vCenter 5.5 Appliance communication with AD in multiple sites

$

I have installed a new vCenter Appliance 5.5 which is located in a separated Active Directory Site. And the problem is when i am trying to implement AD Authentification, vCenter makes ICMP connection with every Domain Controller in the domain, not only with the one, who is placed in the Active Directory Site with the preconfigured ip subnet for the site. How can i make vCenter communicate with only one DC, placed in the same site?
IP adress for vCenter: 10.128.17.16

IP adress for DC: 10.128.67.8
Site subnet: 10.128.0.0/16
When vCenter goes first to DC in this site - AD Authentificatin config is successful, but when it goes to DC from another Site the request is blocked by firewall and writes 'Invalid Active Directory domain'

VMware With MS Exchange 2012

During a vSphere vMotion operation, memory pages are copied from the source ESXi host to the destination. These pages are copied while the virtual machine is running. During the transition of the virtual machine from running on the source to the destination host, a very slight disruption in network connectivity might occur, typically characterized by a single dropped ping. In most cases this is not a concern, however in highly active environments, this disruption might be enough to trigger the cluster toevict the DAG node temporarily, causing database failover. To mitigate cluster node eviction, the cluster heartbeat interval can be adjusted.

My Question is how should we configure heartbeat interval, and what should be the idle value. Kindly suggest. Many Thanks.

Cold Migration Fails with Cannot Connect to Host

$

I've having a problem that I've done many times before, but now that it's not working I don't know if I'm having a brain dump and missing something obvious or something changed in my environment that's causing it and I need feedback as to what direction I should look towards.

Here is my environment:

I have one vCenter 5.1 server in my TRUST (i.e. - internal private network) along with 2 clusters that I'm managing.  One is a non-EVC enabled cluster that's running in the same TRUST network that my vCenter is on (i.e. - 10.x.x.x).  The other cluster is an EVC enabled one that's located in my DMZ (i.e. - 192.x.x.x) and both environments are configured via a firewall for communication.

All ESXi host servers are running v5.1 U1 (1157734).  I have 2 hosts in DMZ cluster and 4 hosts in TRUST cluster.  I have 2 datastores for DMZ cluster that are shared and 10 datastores for TRUST cluster that are shared.  I can vMotion and vStorage Motion successfully within each of the clusters with no problems.  I'm also using the vSphere Web Client to manage all of this.

I recently moved a VM from TRUST network to DMZ successfully by doing a cold migration for various reasons such as both clusters are on separate networks, non-shared datastores between them, EVC vs. non-EVC, etc.  Now, I'm trying to cold migrate the same VM back to the TRUST network and I'm getting the error "Cannot connect to host".

Is my only option here to remove VM from inventory, Import into TRUST cluster?  Maybe that's what I did the first time around, just can't recall...again...possible brain dump here

**Update** - I just ran another test by moving another VM from TRUST to DMZ and it was successful.  It's only when I try to move it back from DMZ to TRUST that it fails.  I'm not getting much love from the community on this one, so looks like I'm just going to contact VMware support for this.

How To Clean Up Failed vCenter 5.1 Upgrade

$

Recently I attempted to upgrade our vCenter server from 5.1 Update 1 to 5.1 Update 2c.  The update failed and I had to work with technical support to return to a working state.

So now I am returning to this project.  I want to upgrade the server to 5.1 Update 3.  When I launch the SSO install, I get a message that it is "Resuming the InstallShield Wizard for vCenter Single Sign On".  Obviously it remembers the previous failed attempt.

How do I clean up that failed attempt so I can proceed with moving to 5.1u3?

I have vCenter server 5.5 and SQL DB server where vCenter Database are hosted.

Suppose if my vCenter server OS crashed and now it is not recoverable. What I need to do rebuild my vCenter server ?

If I install new vCenter server with existing database, It will be on same stage as earlier one or I need to create datacenter, clsuter, connect ESXi host to vCenter, create resource pool and etc.

If any one done this in past please guide me.

VM Memory Allocation & Usage

I have read a great deal of information as far as how memory is defined in VMware, but I am not sure what assumptions I can/should make when dealing with memory allocations, etc...

Below is a shot of my SQL server consumed vs active.  Can I assume that I don't really need to have 32+GB RAM allocated to it based on the active guest memory?

vCenter 5.5 SSO and a child domain as identity source

$

Hello,

we have an Active Directory with 2 domain in the forest.

One root domain "contoso.local" and one child domain "belgium.contoso.com"

Only the child domain contains resources (users and computers).

When adding the child domain as an AD identity source, automatically SSO converts it to the root domain.

The login is then working, but we must use the form user@childdomain or childdomain\user, even if we set the default SSO domain to be the root.

Any idea how to add the child domain as the default identity source, so we are not forced to enter the domain name in the login ?

Thanks

How can you move a folder or a file from one datastore to another

$
0
0

I am NOT talking about moving a VM, just a folder like a folder called ISO and a bunch of ISO's in the folder for example. You cannot use Migrate for that so please don't tell me to right click the VM and select migrate.

Current Options

Of course I can download a folder to my desktop, then re upload the folder from my desktop, but looking for something in preferable the gui of vcenter (either web or client) or last result going to putty and issuing a command. Not that I don't like putty, I love it, but I normally have security turned off for commands, so when I want to move some files or folders around, it is a pain.

Thanks anyone for you help.
