VCSA 5.5 u2 and WinServer 2012R2

I have an odd situation here....

I am running the VCSA 5.5u2 appliance in a Win Server 2012 R2 Forest and Domain.

I am able to join the appliance to the domain (According to the :5840 website),   however whenever I go into the vSphere web client to get my AD perms set up using default root login,  it is not showing my AD domain as an option.

What am I missing here?

I checked my DNS, forward and reverse entries are in there for my AD server (again, it said it successfully connected to AD),

I've rebooted the appliance numerous times.

Time is synced to the AD controller....

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

SSO fails to start after upgrading to vCenter 5.1 Update 2

After trying to update the vCenter server from V5.1 U1 to U2 the SSO service fails to start. The following information is registered in the event log with event id 7031:

The vCenter Single Sign On service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

No log files are being created / updated when the service is trying to start.

Anyone had had a similar experience with the SSO service or hints on what to look for?

The main thing to mention here is I am using Safari on OS X Yosemite. I am able to use Firefox to a certain extent, but unable to open a VM console still.

vCenter Server vCPU Sizing

I'm trying to determine how many vCPUs a virtualized vCenter would need based on the enviornment size.  Vmware gives some guidance here based on physical CPUs:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2052334

While that helps me know I should have at least as many vCPus as they specify for physical CPUs, it doesn't tell me how many vCPUs is too many. Unlike pCPUs, having too many vCPUs can cause a negative performance impact:

Virtual CPUs – The Overprovisioning Penalty of vCPU to pCPU ratios | ZDNet

Is there a guide for vCenter to show not now many physical CPUs but how many vCPUs you should add to a vCenter Server instance based on the size of the environment so I can take this factor into account?

Migrate Database vCenter to other server !!!

Friends, I migrated the sqlexpress database to a new sql server server, vCenter changed the odbc to the new server and database via ODBC connection works 100%, but when I restart the vCenter service is still used to base of ancient sqlexpress data, realized the vCenter service there is a dependence that points to the served the sqlexpress / instantiates, how can I change this dependence to point to the new server?

Drives go missing after IBM DB2 patching - IBM DB2 cluster server

Hi -

My Drive went missing after patching DB2, currently Vmdks are attached to the first server, and when I attach it to other server it gives BSOD.

Server version - 2008 R2

Esxi 5.5

I have tried to get any guide for VMware + IBM DB2 installation guide to confirm the setting but I haven't found any. Can any one help me with the document.

Both the VMs are on the same host, and are configured through affinity rule to remain on the same host. However the mode selected for scsi controller is physical mode - I am not the one one who configured it. Can anyone please help  me on this.

Also i cannot see any datastore through my Vcenter server. I can only see LUNs. I have atleast 5 datastore but I cannot see any through Vcenter server.

One VM is powered on with local disk , i.e C drive and the other disk attached to it but not showing in side windows machine as a drive, other is popoing BSOD  when attached and powered on.

Kindly help how should I deal with this issue.

I have tried to brief almost everything I know about the so far.

Many Thanks.

Migrated SQL Database; Error Recreating Some Jobs

I migrated my databases to a new SQL server successfully.  I am now recreating the SQL jobs per article 2006097.  All worked except for the following:

job_dbm_performance_data_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_day_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_month_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_week_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_year_mssql.sql

I am getting error:

Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 36 (lines very depending on the job)

Invalid object name 'vpx_job_log'.

Thoughts?

Webclient not authenticated

Dear All,

When I try to login with my Windows domain account to the webclient I'm receiving this error message.

"Client is not authenticated to VMware Server XXXX:10443".

However it logs me in and it seems I have admin access, I can do configuration changes, but I don't see my Vcenter Server nor any VMs. My domain account is also a member of the local administrator group where Vcenter is installed. Vcenter runs on a Win2008 R2 server.

To make it work I log in with the local machine account which is in the administrator group of the Vcenter server. This works fine. But I would like to use my domain account for SSO.

Recently I upgrade my Vcenter 5.5 server to the latest release and I hoped this would fix my issue. Unfortunately it didn't.

Here in the forum I read that it might be an issue with the Inventory database and a reset could fix it. I'm not sure if there are any drawback if I reset the inventory database and if it is really the fix for my issue.

Any hints are highly appreciated.

vCenter 5.5 install - physical vs virtual

$

We are leveraging enterprise plus edition and we have around 600 esxi hosts and 5000 vms and 50 clusters. Currently we are ruining vCenter 5.1 in a VM ( cluster-HA/DRS) with stand alone backend SQL DB running on separate VM. We plan to migrate VSS to DVSs and leverage other features of plus edition. Is VM still good for vCenter 5.5, if so what is the max resources and other configurations , I need to take into consideration for deploying vCenter in a VM? Appreciate your help

Thanks,

Sunny

Help with Design please

We have a total of 17 vcenters, all 5.1.  I'd like to reduce the number and upgrade to 5.5.  My question is around SSO and what is the best design?  We have two sites in the UK with a further one in Burmuda and one in India.  I'm unsure of the best design for SSO.  Any ideas?

How to move / copy some VMDKs?

$

I have a VM with 2 VMDKs on the new SAN and 2 virtual RDM disks referring to data on the old SAN.

I want to have all data in VMDKs on the new SAN.

One way to do it is to do a Datastore migration to a (new) datastore on teh new SAN. That will pull in all the data from the virtual RDM disks into a new VMDK on the new SAN.

But, that wil also copy / move the data from the 2 VMDKs that are allready on the new SAN.

Is there a simple option to just simply pull in the 2 RDM disks to the directory on the new SAN where the other data is now?

My environment is a vCenter 5.5 with ESXi 5.5 hosts

Datastores are VMFS5

Lag in vCenter awareness of prior actions, aka vCenter migration can't find the network I just created

This is a somewhat oddball question. I'm trying to get a solid, precise understanding of how vCenter updates its "state model" with regard to programmatic changes to resources.

Here's our scenario:

(vCenter and ESXi hosts are latest 5.5 updates)

Using pyVmomi, we program against the infrastructure API, specifically connecting to vCenter.

In preparation for a VM migration, we create a portgroup on a target host (again, our connection is to vCenter, not the ESXi host.) The call returns successfully without error. I can validate the called succeeds via the ESXi logs.

We then immediately start a migration to the host.

*most* of the time, this works as expected. However, on occasion the migration fails because vCenter seems to not know about the portgroup we just created.

Typical message: "Currently connected network interface 'Network adapter 1' uses network 'nic-404316-430472-0', which is not accessible."

Well, we just created the network/portgroup a few milliseconds prior. I see success in the logs.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that vCenter forwards the portgroup creation off to the target ESXi hosts, but doesn't update its internal model of the world till some time later.

So my questions are:

1) How does vCenter's state model work?

2) What is the suggested way to know when it's safe to use a resource (e.g. a portgroup) after it's been created?

Thanks,

Matt

Pre-register extension in vC instal package

$

Hello,

For industrialization needs, I am wondering if we can pre-register an extension in the vCenter iso, I mean by that provide a custom vC installation package that would already contain a specific plug-in in addition to the default ones (for example the NetApp VSC).

This is feasible for the ESXi image using Imagebuilder, but I wonder if it exists a kind of vCenterImageBuilder that would allow to do such thing?

Thanks,

VM vMotion across DataCenters

$

have an interesting situation in our VMware Infrastructure.   We have what appears to be 2 DataCenters observed in our vCenter Server 5.5.  All hosts are ESXi5.5.

I have always worked vMotion under the belief that I could not vMotion a VM in one DataCenter into a host on another DataCenter.   Each DataCenter supports different vLan subnets.  However, in our situation that appears NOT to be true.   We have been able to vMotion a VM from DataCenter2 to DataCenter1.   The odd thing is that we CAN NOT vMotion the other way around.  So, vMotion is only one way.

I thought this might be explained by looking at the way the switches are setup in each DataCenter.

DataCenter1:   Hosts on this DataCenter are setup with standard virtual switches.

DataCenter2.   Hosts on this DataCenter are setup with dvSwitches

I don't see any VMports or management network assigned to the IP addresses on either DataCenter.

The shared storage also is different and that is what I would expect since each DataCenter hosts its own SAN.

So, I'm confused.  How is it that a VM can vMotion across DataCenters?

vpxd.log file constantly logs errors "no route to host" referring to the old vCenter Server address (before it was changed)

Hello,

We are having troubles with configuring High Availability (https://communities.vmware.com/thread/496531), and I think this could be related to this issue.

In the vpxd.log file, we see contant logging of this error.

The system has 2 hosts, 1 vcenter appliance.

During setup, we needed to change the IP of the vCenter server from .133 to .143.

Now I see that in the vpxd-11.log file there are constantly erros being logged, referring to .133.

There are no issues on the platform (vMotion is OK, vCenter is OK), only with High Availability election we have a problem.

I checked both the vpxd.cfg files on both hosts, and they have no references to .133 (<Ip Server> and <Ip> are correct).

So please were is this reference coming from.

Any ideas, any checks I can do?

Best Regards,

Joris

vCenter appliance VPX Crashing after Update version 5.5 U2d

I opened a support request and hoping to hear back from them Monday and hoping the community can help.  Pretty much after updating the vCenter appliance to version to 5.5 U2d VPX is crashing every minute and filling up the core dump storage.  Looking in the VPX logs it looks like a database issue.

Hi,

Should i put the vCenter on the same network as the management of the ESXi host ?

Now I have standard vSwitch0 configured with vmkernel port=vMotion, vmkernel port=Management Network.... so im wondering if I also should create v vmnetwork for example named Mgmt Network as seen on the picture.

Unable to add a host to datacenter

Greetings all

I am currently a student and having an issue with adding a host under a datacenter in the Web Client. The error i receive is License not available to perform this operation. License file download from IP Address to vCenter Server failed due to exception" vim.fault.HostConnectFault. After a week of troubleshooting my group and even the professor is stumped on the issue as it makes contact with the server and adds the host but stalls at 80% then fails and removes the host. We have even started the ESXI OS from scratch which did not make much of a difference. This is happening on version 5.5 and i would appreciate any help i could possibly get. Thanks!

I read through how to implement vSphere Authentication Proxy, but I still don't get what it is. What does it do as opposed to not having it?
