Unable to rename vCenter 6.7

$

Hello

Our customer has a vCenter server with the hostname 'vcenter'. I've upgraded to 6.7.0.42000 so that I can rename it, but the process (as outlined in Changing your vCenter Server's FQDN - VMware vSphere Blog)) produces the error:

"The SSO username does not have administrator privilege."

Obviously I've checked that administrator@vsphere.local is indeed an administrator and everything looks OK. I've tried to create another user, but this process only accepts administrator@vsphere.local.

Google draws a blank on that error.

Any ideas?

Unable to login VCSA 6.5 after reboot

hi,

My VCSA 6.5 was running perfectly fine with one ESXI 6.5 host and created couple of instances but after rebooting unable to login with the correct password.

I cannot revoke my ESXi host license as it was activated in VCSA, kindly advice to recover my VCSA without loosing anything.

Appreciate your support

Unqble to Start the vCenter 5.1 services after reboot

i have made below changes. i am able to start the VMware VirtualCenter Server service but unable to login with admin account.

I have just edit the vpxd.conf located in C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\

from

<sso>

     <enabled>true</enabled>

to

<enabled>false</enabled>

other than VMware VirtualCenter Server service not able to start any vmware services.

below is the windows event log.

The vCenter Single Sign On service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 390 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

I deleted the /storage/seat/eventtblsp directory - now VCSA won't function

I was having issues with VCSA 6.7 (6.7.0.42000) due to /storage/seat filling up despite having 30 day retention policies for alarms and tasks.

The I noticed that /storage/seat/eventtblsp was taking up all that space (around 8 gigs) so I nuked it (rm -R) and rebooted the appliance. Now I am getting the same error I was getting before I nuked the directory, however before after rebooting it worked for a while:

Could not connect to one or more vCenter Server systems:https://SERVER-IP:443/sdk

vpxd.log shows complaints of unable to perform SQL queries by VDBStatement on file pg_tblspc. Obviously I nuked something I should not have.

Any way to rebuild the necessary databases? What are my other options? Right now I have a week old backup of the VC.

Thanks in advance,

~levi

Cloning a running VCenter

Good Day,

I am using Vsphere 6.5upd1  and the same version on a Vcenter appliance.    Is it OK to make a clone of the Vcenter server itself while it is running?   I am doing this for backup purposes only.   We are a small shop only 4 hosts and not running HA so things would be kind of quiet when I do this.  But  I do have concerns if the backup clone would work correctly if I ever needed it.

I have used the backup routine inside the appliance itself and that works fine.   But if cloning it while running is OK it would make things easier.

Thank you,

how-to creat an alarm "CD-ROM connected"?

Hi,

is it possible to create an alarm which is triggered when a cd-rom is connected to a vm? It's distracting when you want to use the maintenace mode an someone forgot to disconnect a cd-rom, especially when you want to update esx-server over night and DRS stopps working because of the connected cd-rom.

vCSA 5.5.0a - Users with spaces are unable to authenticate

I am not able to login to the vSphere Web Client or full client when the username contains spaces.  I was able to figure this out after some troubleshooting.

I created a user named "Testing" and it logs in just fine, so I renamed it to "Testing Test" and I am no longer able to login.

Anyone else seeing this?

AD and vCenter 6.7 Invalid Credentials

$

Hello,

I've been working on setting up my first lab to study for VCP and having some trouble getting AD authentication to work within vcenter. This is a brand new AD server, Win server 2019 and domain functional level 2016 which is supported in 6.7u1 and after. I've successfully joined the VCSA to the domain, added the identity source, and am able to add users via global permissions from the AD server. When I attempt to login with AD credentials I get an Audit Success from the AD server, but over in VCSA it just says "Invalid Credentials". From what I can tell it's not a time skew issue because both systems receive time from pool.ntp.org. Any help would be appreciated, I've been beating my head against this issue for a week or two now, and pretty much exhausted what I can find online. I've tried multiple times to leave/join the domain via cli per the 6.5 AD issue, but that doesn't seem to help. I've dug around in the logs quite a bit, and these are the two entries that stand out to me.

/var/log/vmware/sso/websso.log

/var/log/audit/sso-events/audit_events.log 2019-11-05T18:45:17.724Z {"user":"administrator@butte.local","client":"192.168.1.25","timestamp":"11/05/2019 18:45:17 UTC","description":"User administrator@butte.local@192.168.1.25 failed to log in with response code 401","eventSeverity":"INFO","type":"com.vmware.sso.LoginFailure"}

Domain-joined vSphere Permissions

Hi,

I have made a new appliance (vSphere 6.7) which I am using to manage a few VMs.

My colleagues should be able to login with their Active Directory-account, but somehow I can't get this to work.

I had it working on an old vSphere Appliance, but I needed to create a new one (change in FQDN).

The appliance joins the domain just fine, same for adding it as a identity source. A user is also able to login with AD-credentials.

When I want to add permissions on a specific VM, Folder e.t.c., it asks me for the username (which it also finds) but when I hit save, it says the user localos\username can't be found.

This error is right, but I selected the domain, not the localos. This makes that I cannot add permissions.

So, for example:

I want to give user 'john' in domain TEST.hq rights on VM X.

When I click 'add permission', select domain A and click John's name from the dropdown, and click 'Ok' it gives me the following error:

The user or group localos\john cannot be found.

How can I fix this?

BTW, I redeployed a new instance. The VMware-SSO-domain is vsphere.local.

Testing of VCSA Syslog Output

Part of our qualification testing requires me to show that the appropriate levels of Syslog get from VCSA 6.7u2 to our Syslog server. The setting is "Warning" for logging options.

If I log into VCSA via SSH and issue "logger" commands I see logs getting to the Syslog server, but they don't seem to be reflecting the facility and severity levels I specify on the CLI.

If I do:

logger -p syslog.info "Test Info"

I see a log message appear in the Syslog server with facility code 1 and severity 5. I would expect severity 6. And how did this get past the filters for "Warning" logging options?

If I do:

logger -p syslog.emerg "Test Emerg"

I see a log message appear in the Syslog server with facility code 1 and severity 5 again! What happened to severity 0?

Am I doing something wrong? Or are my expectations miss placed as to what should happen?

How should I show deliberately and on demand that logs of the right level get through to the Syslog server and others do not?

Ideas much appreciated, thanks.

P2V / Upgrade fail -- "Unable to enumerate and validate the root certificates from the TRUSTED_ROOTS VECS store."

I'm trying to upgrade from a Windows VCS (6.5) to VCSA (6.7).   Falling at the first hurdle though -- the migration assistant, run on the Windows VCS fails with:

Error: Unable to enumerate and validate the root certificates from the TRUSTED_ROOTS VECS store.

Resolution: Make sure that the vmafd service is reachable and started before continuing.

The VMware afd service is running though (it runs as a Windows service, "Local System" user).  I have tried the usual, restarting service to no avail.  The service does have "Allow service to interact with desktop" selected. Under the vSphere Web Client / Root Certificates I can see the normal CA cert (VMware Engineering) which is not expired and looks fine.

No idea why this isn't working (I'm not really a Windows guy), so any pointers appreciated.

Vcenter locking me out!

Hi,

Running VCSA 6.7.0.4

So I have run into a strange issue.  I have recently changed my domain admin account password, and now it is being locked out every 15 or so minutes.  Using a bunch of tools we have determined that VCSA is locking me out.  The question is where would my credentials be stored?

Thanks

I keep getting the error that my session is not authenticated anymore and click ok, which then makes me sign back in.  I have the default timeout set to 120 minutes, but this is kicking me out well before that time limit.

I don't see anything else that would be kicking me out prematurely and am scratching my head as to why it's even happening.

vCSA Backup Scheduler - wrong Time Zone

Hi everybody,

does anybody have the same issue?

The Backup Job for the vcsa is scheduled to start at 03.00 am (Europe/Berlin), but it starts at 04.00 am,

which seems to be a bug.

vcsa_backup_scheduler.JPG

Trying with different vcsa's has the same result.

It would have made sense, if it started 02.00 am (UTC) but it seems to be a small bug in the scheduling parameter to ignore the configured time-zone and add it up after applying changes.

Best regards

How to repeat alarms on vCenter 6.7

$

Hi,

I had a look around in the document but it is unclear as to how should I configure alarm which should repeat.

Below I wish to repeat the alarm if the host is above 85% CPU usage for 5 minutes and it should repeat every 15 minutes. I do not see the option to make it repeat. Only in flash I see this.

Highly appreciate any pointers.

How to retrieve vm memory limit configured using rest API

$

Hi everyone,

I would like to know how can I retrieve the value configured for the memory limit set in a VM using API rest?

I tried to get this value using the API service: "curl -k -i  https://???/rest/vcenter/vm/???/hardware/memory", and got the values below;

"hot_add_increment_size_MiB":128,
"size_MiB":8192,
"hot_add_enabled":true,
"hot_add_limit_MiB":131072

But none of these values is the value set on memory limit and what I need to know is how can I get the memory limit value configured through API rest (preferably) or by any other means?

Thanks a lot!
