VCSA 6.5 to 6.7 upgrade question

$

G'Day all,

I'm in the process of doing the upgrade now from VCSA 6.5 to 6.7, after the Stage 2 pre-upgrade checks have run it shows an issue with "External Extensions" such as Dell OpenManage Integration (the server is a Dell R740 with the Dell ESXi6.5U3 A01 release installed fresh) and vRealize Orchestration Manager which appears to hav ebeen installed but never used and is currently off.

My question is, can I ignore this issue and let the upgrade run or do I have to remove some components to guarantee success?

Thanks

Sid

Hardware Monitoring issue vCenter 6.7

Hi all,

i am facing a strange issue with 4 new Dell R740 Hosts currently running ESXi  6.7.0 Update 3 (Build 15018017). All sensors are no longer available as soon as a Server is added to VCenter 6.7.0 Build 13007421.

Failed - The Operation is not supported on the object.

I have added two Servers and i cannot retrieve Health Information since. The remaining two are not connected to VCenter yet and the sensor Information can be retrieved without any issue.

Wbem has been checked and watchdog restarted.

VCenter will be updated soon so it might fix the issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mat

VCSA 6.7: Postgres Archiver Service stopped & PSC Health/vCenter Server "degraded"

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently setting up a new environment using ESXi 6.7 with an vCenter appliance deployed on the host. Setting up the hsot and the vCenter worked pretty well, and so far everything seems to be working alright, but I noticed some strange behaviour regarding the services of the vCenter:

VMware Postgres Archiver:

This service seems to change to status "stopped" every once in a while. I searched the KB and found a tip to change the wal_sender_timeout parameter to 600s, so the service doesn't run into any timeouts, but sadly this didn't help. I tried setting wal_sender_timeout to 0 (disabling the timeout), bu the issue still persists.

VMware Knowledge Base

My logfiles present the same Messages as described in this KB-article:

/var/log/vmware/vpostgres/pg_archiver.log-[n].stderr:

ERROR  pg_archiver could not receive data from WAL stream: server closed the connection unexpectedly
This probably means the server terminated abnormally

before or while processing the request.

/var/log/vmware/vpostgres/postgresql-[nn].log:

[unknown] archiver LOG:  terminating walsender process due to replication timeout

wal.png

VMware PSC Health & VMware vCenter Server:

Both of these services currently show up as "degraded":

services.jpg

Meanwhile the summary page reports everything as "good":

good.jpg

The appliance has been assigned 16GB of RAM and 2vCPUs. Current Version:

version.jpg

Any ideas how to fix these services, or where to check for further information about the status of the PCS Service and the vCenter Server?

With regards,

Fabian

Help retrieving VCSA 5.5 License Key

Hello,

After searching the web endlessly I can't seem to find a solution to this problem. Hopefully someone here might be able to help or tell me my ambitions aren't worth pursuing.

Basically the 5.5 vCenter Appliance we were using to manage our server infrastructure is dead in the water and we've just decided to re-deploy a new one. However we'll require the license key from the old appliance. With the web client down on the old appliance, is there a way to retrieve the license from it so that we may use the license again?

I have found the license files in the /usr/lib/vmware-vpx/licenses/site/ directory. But it appears that all the keys are hashed, and there are many files. Is there a command to return the currently assigned licenses on the appliance without hash?

Any help with this? Thanks in advance

I migrated to external PSC to 6.7u3 before attempting to do the same for vCenter itself. I keep getting an error at Starting VMware Authentication Framework. The Error that comes up is:

DNS is working. I can ping the host name of the vcenter server, and its alias, they both come back as responsive.

"Unable to query vSphere health information" and "Unable to query vSAN health information" after certificate replacement - VCSA 6.7U2

I attempted to replace my machine cert on my VCSA server.  After a few attempts I gave up and performed a full certificate reset using the `/usr/lib/vmware-vmca/bin/certificate-manager` tool.

Now I'm seeing the following errors in the UI when looking at any Health or vSAN information.   Anyone know how to resolve this?  I upgraded to 6.7.0.40000 and that didn't help.

Rsyslog in vCenter 6.7U3 (Photon OS) stops working ~10min after starting

$

Hello,

We have upgraded our vCenter appliance (VCSA) to 6.7U3 a few days ago and we noticed a gap of logs in our syslog server (kiwi) since then.

I did a bit of troubleshooting but Rsyslog (the syslog client running on VCSA) is completely new to me.

I use this command to restart Rsyslog:

systemctl restart rsyslog

Right after starting up Rsyslog, logs are being sent to our syslog server.

~10min later, no more logs are sent.

The vCenter log file in our syslog server stops getting updated.
I did a tcpdump in our vCenter and I see that the vCenter stops sending logs.
Using UDP or TCP doesn't fix the issue.

I looked for errors in various log files in the vCenter but can't find anything.

This is what /var/log/vmware/rsyslogd/rsyslogd-syslog.log looks like after restarting Rsyslog:

2019-09-11T11:53:12.812087+02:00 info rsyslogd [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="8.37.0" x-pid="21203" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] exiting on signal 15.

Rsyslog is still running based on this command

systemctl status rsyslog.service

(real hostname has been replaced by vcenter.domain.local)

I created a ticket at VMware support, but the agent wasn't able to find any errors as well and she suggested to take a backup of our vCenter and reinstall with a restore to get a fresh install of Photon OS since Rsyslog is integrated in Photon OS. I'm not going to do that now, maybe as a last troubleshooting step.

In the meantime, do you guys have an idea? Wrong Rsyslog config?

Thx for your help.

AuthenticationError: One or more certificates cannot be verified - vCenter 6.5

Hi,

I am trying to configure automated backup of vCenter 6.5 server using API call and script. Everything looks ok from Script perspective however its always failing with error "AuthenticationError: One or more certificates cannot be verified ".

I feel like it has something to do with external PSC controllers certificates as currently it has only 2 PSCs. However, Looking at the “STS signing” tab under Administration-> Configuration of vCenter, I see some certificate chain with servers that are no longer available in environment. Looks like PSCs were not removed properly in past as we only have 2 PSCs, but STS signing shows 4 PSCs.

Can someone please suggest some fix for this.

How can I fix this? The config hasn't changed and the only thing that's ocurred is the restart.

Thanks in advance.

Applications no longer deploying - timed out

Hello,

Since a few days ago, suddenly OVF templates through programs started to no longer deploy.

Deploying through the vCenter interface works, but from the vRLCM installer, it no longer works.

I end up with these errors: "2019-11-30T17:21:49.105Z - error: Could not get response in 30000 ms, from host: vcenter.internal.masterwayz.nl"

"ovf deployment failed after 1800000 ms passed in which no response from the server was received"

A NSX-T Edge deployment also fails with an error saying that it cannot write the request to the server with the vmdk file. (don't remember it exactly)

This suddenly happened, I feel like something is very broken here and I have no clue what I can do to fix it.

Where is the private key when using certificate-manager's web UI?

My old vCenter crashed and I'm trying to add custom certificates on the new one however when I complete the CSR generation on the web UI there are just two options, copy and download.

Copy does what it says, copies the CSR to the clipboard and download downloads it, just the CSR, no private key. The CSR, naturally, is enough to get the signed certificate but at import time I have no private key to match and thus it won't accept the certificate.

How can I get a hold of the private key? Why after so many iterations can't VMware get it right--I mean, vCenter is really expensive, you sort of expect it to be flawless. What's the point of the web UI if you still have to hunt down files in the CLI. I tried using this wildcard certificate I'm using in several places but it won't accept it, I assume it's because it doesn't explicitly has the hostname.

I looked it up (the private key) on /usr/lib/vmware-vmca/bin already expecting it not to be there, and surely it wasn't. I went to /tmp and looked up anything with today's timestamp (/tmp/jna-root) but it was empty. The rest on /tmp are .part files.

Anyway, I appreciate your help on this -- and thanks !
