Long vCenter login time if the primary server (identity source) fails

Hi,

we have a vCenter 6.7 U2 environment and configured the identity sources to connect vCenter with the Active Directory. This is working fine, but when the primary server is not reachable anymore, it took approx. 5min to login. We have 3 different kind of systems and facing on all of them the same behavior.

I tryed to find any timeout settings, but couldn't find anything. Only hint was to add "options timeout:1 attempts:1 rotate" in the resolv.conf, but this didn't help.

Question to localaccounts on VCSA

Hia

I'm trying to create a local account on the VCSA that is able to run 'service-control --status' in the bash shell. While trying to do this I've come accross a few things I cant really explain.

1. I can create users without any problem using "localaccounts.user.add --username x --role y -- password" but I cant edit or delete them without getting an error that the user is not recognized.

     - localaccounts.user.list only lists the root user. Didn't change after setting the bash shell as default for my custom user.

     - I can see all the users I created in my VCSA Web Interface, but I cant edit or delete useres here.

2. None of the given roles, even superAdmin, seems to have the permissions to run service-control. Do I need a root shell to run those commands?

I'm clearly missing something, overread something.. hoping you can point me in the right direction. I'm running a VCSA V6.7 U3 Build 14367737.

David

I have a vCenter 6.5 and wants to upgrading it to 6.7. I installed vCenter 6.7:

1- Any option about export the previous vCenter configuration to the new one?

2- For join ESXi hosts to the new vCenter, should I remove them from the old vCenter then add to the new vCenter?

Thank you.

ESXi Permissions for Students

$

Hello everyone,

I'm new here so I hope this is the correct place for this question...  We've recently installed an ESXi Server, and connected to a SAN for our students to learn how to create their own cloud infrastructure.  I'm looking for the right permission set for them - they need to be able to explore (read-only) the interface, and create and run their own VM's.  I'd rather them not see anyone else's VM (or at least not be able to modify them).

We're using ESXi v6.7.0 update 3.

I've been playing with a bunch of different permission configurations, but can't quite seem to find the right config.  I've come close a couple times, but not 100%.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Scott

Upgrade fails with Not enough disk space

Hi,

I'm using vcsa-cli-installer and trying to upgrade from vCenter 6.5U1 to 6.7U1. It is however failing:

Provide this as export folder in source_vc.vc_vcsa.export_dir field in template.]

In the vc_vcsa section of my config file I have specified:

"export_dir": "/storage/updatemgr/temp"

The disk space of my source vCenter is as follows:

Filesystem                                Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/mapper/autodeploy_vg-autodeploy      9.8G   34M  9.2G   1% /storage/autodeploy

So my /storage/updatemgr has 91G of available disk space which should be more than enough.

Not sure what the easiest method would to proceed here?

Help with Host/Datastore re-assignment

$

Howdy all,

I am attempting to move an existing Host from one Datacenter to another Datacenter (maxing out resources in one Datacenter) and remove the existing Datastores and re-assigning new Datastores. I have successfully disconnected/removed the host from one Datacenter to the other but I am stuck on how to remove the 7 Datastores that were assigned to the Host when in the original Datacenter and assign the Datastores that are tied to the newer Datacenter (SAN Storage).

Is this possible and what are the steps to remove the Datastores and re-assign new Datastores?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

VCSA 6.7 Individual Resource Pool Permissions No Longer Work

$

Hey everyone,

We recently upgraded to VCSA 6.7 and everything is working great except for the custom permissions I had setup.

Originally, our setup was that globally, no one besides admins had access from the top-level and that propagated to all children. I would then assign an individual resource pool role to a specified user/group which had full permissions to create/edit/delete/snapshot/etc VMs and all worked perfectly. Users would sign in and only see their individually-assigned pools. This worked because, as VMware states, the permissions hierarchy says that child objects override parent objects every time.

Upgrade to 6.7 and that no longer works. The same setup results in users, despite having the ability to create a new VM in their respective pools, no access on the server/datacenter/datastore/etc.

While the latter makes more sense (if I don't have permissions to access the datacenter my pool resides on, why should I be able to create a VM on it), that makes it impossible to limit people's view of the entire infrastructure impossible. I've been able to somewhat mimic the former permissions by painstakingly going through and assigning permissions on a per-level basis (no inheritance, all manually), but there's got to be a better way!

Zabbix generate spam login messages in vCenter

Hello!

Our Zabbix server is configured to monitor vCenter servers. A standard template is used. Monitoring works fine, but there is a problem: to collect data zabbix once a minute logs to the vCenter server and to each host, and in the vCenter logs an audit message is written about the successful user login. There are a lot of these messages and this prevents troubleshooting. Is there a way to avoid writing to vCenter audit logs for zabbix user?

How do I change hostnames of hosts in 2-node vSAN cluster?

$

I am creating a Windows AD setup and joined my 2-node vSAN hosts into the domain as well as vCenter, now I want to re-name the hostnames in vCenter for these two hosts in the vSAN cluster from their old hostnames to the new ones. Already was able to change hostname of vCenter itself.

I am able to change the hostname and domain name/search domain via TCP/IP stack on the hosts but vCenter of course still has the hosts added with old domain name. How do I essentially edit the hostname that vCenter uses to access and work with these hosts?

Cheers,

Chris

VCSA 6.7 Reboot reason

Hi Guys,

I URGENTLY need to search for a reboot reason for a vcenter VCSA 6.7 node.

I cannot see anything in "tasks" in the UI, and in vpxd.log only see "Initiating VMware VirtualCenter shutdown"

Which log file do I need to check on the vcenter appliance to find the reason entered for the node reboot?!

Many thanks in advance, this is basic, but killing me.

Appliance Management Interface - Change Password Policy Requirements?

$

Hello all,

vCenter // vSphere 6.7.0.41000

Can you change the password requirements displayed for the vCenter Server Appliance Management interface?

I understand you can specify SSO Password Policy settings in the vSphere client; However the Appliance Management Interface (:5480) appears to have its own password policy settings unaffected by the vSphere Client vCenter SSO settings. You can view these settings by logging in to the Appliance Management portal as root where you'll see an Administration tab on the left.

For example, from shell I can create a new localos account with a 6 character password and log in to Appliance Management with that account, even though my SSO Password Policy settings specify 8 characters.

Thank you for any help offered.

Upgrade/Fresh Deployment Query

$

Curious how the community is handling their vCenter version upgrades. Are you typically doing in-place upgrades for minor update revisions and then deploying fresh when you get to a major version release or are you just doing in-place upgrades all the time? For my environment (400 hosts / 7000 virtual machines / 4 vCenter instances) we have been performing in-place upgrades since 5.5 (windows) to where we are today which is 6.5 (vcsa). I am currently in a holding pattern to see when the next major release will come and deciding how that upgrade process will develop out. The only thing that has always worried me about the new deployment is handling all of the distributed virtual switches in the environment since it adds a layer of risk when dealing with it. I am curious to see how others are handling upgrades. Thanks in advance for the comments.
