Cloning to different cluster

$

I have two vSphere 5.1 clusters (prod and stage), using standard vSwitches. The switches have matching port groups. I want to clone a running VM from a host in the production cluster, to the stage cluster. When I get to the "Select compute resource" step in the vSphere Web Client, it says, "Error occurred while calculating compatibility: VM name for clone operation not provided." regardless of which cluster or host I select. In the fat client, compatibility succeeds, but the clone fails while copying virtual machine files, with "Cannot connect to host".

What gives? Thanks.

ESXi host shows "not responding" in vSphere web console after 60-90 seconds following disconnect/reconnect

I'm not sure where to go next with this, hoping someone can offer advice...

This is a fresh install of vCenter 5.5 and an existing ESXi 5.5 server. I see my ESXi host and all details in the web console, but it shows up as "not responding". I can successfully disconnect/reconnect but every time, 60-90 seconds after successful reconnect it goes back to "not responding".

FYI:

Is there anything else I can test or do to isolate what could be causing this? I'm happy to provide any needed additional details.

How to manage default alarms in vCenter Server for multiple teams?

$

Just wondering if anyone else has ran into this situation before. We have a single vCenter Server that is managing 2 environments for Team A and Team B. Team A wants to receive vCenter alerts only for their environment (aka cluster), as does Team B. If an alert is raised in vCenter Server it shouldn't be sent to both teams via SMTP as then it requires the administrators to rule out if it affects their environment. If Team A or Team B receives an alert, instantly they should know its for their environment and it requires attention.

So the above is how the customer wants the alerting to behave. To my knowledge, I can only think of one way to achieve this within vCenter Server and it's a pain to manage. Disable the identified critical default alarms and recreate them for each Team at the cluster level, include an action to send a notification email using SMTP to the teams email alias.

Is there a better way or easier way to do this? It is a shame that vCenter Server won't allow you to define triggers at the top object being vCenter Server and apply overrides at child objects such as clusters, VMs, etc.

The customer is using vCOps as well and I know we can achieve this easily there however for SMTP notifications it can be anywhere up to 15mins before an email alert is received. This is unacceptable and we have repeatedly tested this. Direct from vCenter Server is way faster, so we have identified about 10 critical alarms that the team would want to know about straight away.

Different vSphere license in 1 vCenter

1. We have the following items purchased for our coming project.

vSphere with operation management standard for 1 processor x 6 (3 hosts)

vSphere with operation management enterprise for 1 processor x 6 (3 hosts)

vCenter server 5 standard for vSphere 5 x 1

2. My question is 2 different vSphere license can be manage under single vCenter server?

or we should purchase another vCenter server license?

Thanks.

Unable to Clone or Create VM's after Database Migration

$

We recently migrated our VCDB to a remote server.  Since then, we cannot clone VM's, deploy from templates, or create new VM's.  VMotion and Snapshots are working fine.

When attempting to clone, it stops at 18% and then I get disconnected from VCenter because the VCenter service has stopped on the VCenter server.  When checking the Windows App Logs, I see the corresponding error:

The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

An unrecoverable problem has occurred, stopping the VMware VirtualCenter service. Error: Error[VdbODBCError] (-1) "ODBC error: (23000) - [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'ONLINE_STANDBY', table 'VIM_VCDB.dbo.VPX_VM'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails." is returned when executing SQL statement "INSERT INTO VPX_VM WITH (ROWLOCK) (ID, DATACENTER_ID, HOST_ID, RESOURCE_GROUP_ID, POWER_STATE, DISABLED_SNAPSHOT, FAILED_DMOTION, IS_TEMPLATE, AGENT_ID, AGENT_CNX_STATE, FILE_NAME, LOCAL_FILE_NAME, ESX_AGENT_VM_STATE) VALUES (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?)"

Any suggestions?

Also, what would the ramifications be if I changed ODBC settings to connect to the old VMDB (last known working)?

Start fresh with new vCenter 5.5 install vs upgrade?

I've been trying to get my vCenter Server Appliance 5.1 install to migrate to 5.5 OK, but it's giving me headaches.  Some interface elements are missing, I can't get consoles to work, etc.

That said, can I just start with a fresh vCenter Server Appliance install 5.5 instead?  What settings are even stored within vCenter vs. the individual ESXi host machines?  Is this OK to do on a live system?

Virtual VCenter - Default values

I have a Virtual VCenter version 5.0 running with default values (8GB ram -  2cCPU) and was wondering if that that can be knocked back some.  We are running 2 ESXI 5.0 hosts with 7 small virtual machines between them.  I plan to upgrade the hosts and Vcenter to 5.5 sometime real soon.

The reason I ask is cause I an still learning about Vmware and I was trying a software from Dell - "Foglight" and it says to reduce the CPU to 1 and reduce the Ram to 4GB.

Just wondering,

VCenter start fails after demoting Domain Controller

$

Hi.

Instead of hijacking other one's thread having the same problem I decided to start a new thread, so sorry for double posting.

After promoting a new DC and demoting the old one we have the problem that VCenter 5.1a no longer starts.

Taking a look at the imsTrace.log file of SSOServer we see the following line:

Caused by: javax.resource.spi.ResourceAdapterInternalException: Unable to create managed connection olddc.ourdomain.com:3268

As we can see SSO still tries to contact the old dc now beeing a simple member server instead of the new one - the question is why?

We checked health of AD by running DCDIAG and BPA both not seeing any problems. Additionally we checked DNS by hand to ensure that no SRV or any other records are present which reference the old DC. Also all other AD dependent services like Exchange, SharePoint, DFS run without issue and do not indicate any problems.

We also found the krb5.conf file of SSO which still references the old DC by the following entry:

[realms]
OURDOMAIN.COM = {
    kdc = olddc.ourdomain.com
    default_domain = OURDOMAIN.COM
}

However changing that entry does not solve the problem because after a short period this entry is replaced automagically by ??? - that's the question.

Mybe someon else has some ideas what to check next.

Cheers.

Cannot see Hardware Status of Host ESXi 5.5 anymore in Web client 5.5.

Hello,

I can no longer see the Hardware Status of the Host ESXi 5.5 using the web client. I can however see it under Health status using a direct connection to the host using vSphere client.

If I connect to the Vcenter server appliance using vSphere client I get No new Host data available.  This was working a while ago.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks ,

vCenter 5.5 Installation failing.

Hello Guys,

It's a brand new server with Windows 2008 R2 installed from scratch with all updates.  vCenter Single Sign-On, Web Client, and Inventory Service gets installed with no issues but during the installation of vCenter Server, it gives and error with the following message:

The wizard was interrupted before vmware vcenter could be completely installed. Refer to the log files vim-vci-msi.log.  I have also attached the log file it refers to.  I have already tried KB article 2013922 http://goo.gl/tTjBMQ but no change. I don't see anything obvious that could cause the installation to fail.  Thanks for your help.

vCenter 5.5, cannot login after installing SSO

I have an environment running vCenter 5.5 that we have been using the default administrator@vsphere.local user to login.  After installing SSO, I cannot login using either vSphere or the web client.  When running it from the vCenter server, vSphere says:

vSphere Client could not connect to [vcenter server name]

An unknown connection error occurred. (The request failed because of a connection failure. (Unable to connect to the remote server))

Web client says:

Failed to connect to VMware Lookup Service https://[server]:7444/lookupservice/sdk - SSL certificate verification failed.

I go to that lookupservice url and it looks good and broke:

Is this update, U1c, compatible with Horizon View 5.3 and 6.0?

The support Matrix only shows U1 for View and may other rproducts Like vCD, vCAC.

Does not indicate if 1c, 1b, 1a, etc. are compatible .

Purging old tasks/events in VirtualCenter

$

I thought I would share this procedure I documented to purge old tasks and events in VirtualCenter. I initially opened a support case on this with Vmware because I wanted to get rid of the older tasks and events in VirtualCenter and there was nothing built into VC that would automatically do this. Vmware supports response was basically we don't support the maintenance, backup or data integrity of the VC database. They said you have to delete the data from the tables manually. So I did some research and put together this procedure in case anyone is interested. The tasks and event tables can get pretty large, mine had about 200,000 rows for just 4 ESX servers.

How can I purge old Event and Task data from VirtualCenter?

VirtualCenter does not support doing this directly, the only way you can do this by deleting directly from the database tables. It is strongly recommend to have a functional backup of the VC database before clearing these tables in case of an unforeseen problem. Also the the VC service must be stopped in order to avoid data corruption. This is not a supported procedure by Vmware but should be in my opinion, these tables can get pretty large in big environments as every single task and event is preserved in the database.

The tables where the data is stored are VPX_TASK (Tasks) and VPX_EVENT, VPX_EVENT_ARG (Events). The VPX_EVENT_ARG will usually have more rows then the VPX_EVENT table. This is because the VPX_EVENT table only has one row per event but the VPX_EVENT_ARG table can have multiple rows per event (The link between the 2 tables is the EVENT_ID column).

o     Shutdown the VirtualCenter service

o     Connect to the database server that is hosting the VC database with a SQL browser/client. You can use a free tool like WinSQL Lite (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsql.html) for this.

o     To delete all data in the tables type: ‘delete from VPX_TASK’ then ‘delete from VPX_EVENT’ and then ‘delete from VPX_EVENT_ARG’ and finally ‘Commit’

o     Optionally you can do ‘truncate table VPX_TASK’ then ‘truncate table VPX_EVENT’ and then ‘truncate table VPX_EVENT_ARG’ (Truncate is faster and does not use as much undo space as delete)

o     To selectively delete data older then 30 days: ‘delete from VPX_TASK where complete_time < sysdate - 30)

o     To selectively delete data older then 30 days from VPX_EVENT and VPX_EVENT_ARG is trickier because VPX_EVENT_ARG does not have a date field and it tied to the events in VPX_EVENT by the Event_id field.

o     First delete from the child table (VPX_EVENT_ARG): ‘delete from vpx_event_arg where event_id in (select a.event_id from vpx_event_arg a, vpx_event b where a.event_id = b.event_id and create_time < sysdate - 30)

o     Next commit the delete by typing ‘Commit’

o     Then delete from the parent table (VPX_EVENT): ‘delete from vpx_event where create_time < sysdate – 30’

o     Finally commit again by typing ‘Commit’

o     Start the VirtualCenter service

vCenter 5.5 AD Authentication Help

$

0

Hello,

I was successfully able to install my vCenter Server 5.5. For identity sources I have vsphere.local as default but I have also set-up AD (Integrated Windows Authentication) under configuration. I want to be able to log on using an AD account.

I am able to set vCenter Server permissions using the AD account (users / groups populate just fine from AD domain) and set it with role of Administrator. However I can't log on using the AD account to vCenter server. I keep getting that the username / password is incorrect though I know it isn't. Am I missing something? I have tried in context of

domain\user

user@domain.local

user itself but no go.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
