vCenter Server upgrade - database question

$

Hi All:

We are considering upgrading from vSphere 4.1 update 2 to 5.5, so of course we need to consider upgrading vCenter server and its Update Manager component first, so question comes, we still using SQL 2005 under the hood, is there is a need to upgrade the SQL server database to 2008 or above ?

Thanks

Can we use vcac6.0 -Identity Appliance as sso broker for VC5.5 VA?

I need to install both VC5.5 and VCAC6.0.

I was just wondering whether I can use the vcac6.0 -Identity Appliance  for both VCAC 6.0 and VC5.5

vLan setup on vDS

We have ESXi5 hosts and vCenter5 in our environment.    We have standard switches currently setup and have not migrated them to the vDS yet.    I have a request to setup a new vlan.   Our Networkking folks have setup the physical switches with the vlan trunking and tagging.   If I remember right, what I now have to do since there is also a VM that must be on this vlan is:

1.  setup a Virtual Machine port group on each standard switch in my cluster with the same name and vlan id.

2.  Assign the VM with the vlanid to it

now, here's where I'm uncertain.......how do I get this port group to be a dvportgroup on the vDS?

Hello Gentlemen;

I'm trying add an esxi 5.1 to vcenter 5.1 which is on win2008r2 & sql2008r2) but the following error message is displayed and the host can not be added.

Do you have and idea how to get rid of this error? Any suggestions are appreciated...

Hi All,

Is there any way for me to add the domain name directly as the primary and secondary server URL? like if abc.com is my domain name and x.abc.com and y.abc.com are my domain controllers. Can I add abc.com as my primary and secondary URL for the identity resource abc.com?

I'm using vSphere 5.1 U1c.

I have a cluster comprising 3 ESXi 5.5 nodes. I'm trying to set up profile compliance on this cluster, however I am unable to generate the host profile using any of the nodes as the reference host.

The error on nodes 1 & 2 is:

A general system error occurred:

Call "HostProfileManager.CreateProfile" for object "HostProfileManager" on vCenter Server "<vcenter server>" failed.

The error on node 3 is slightly different:

A general system error occurred:

Call "HostProfileManager.CreateProfile" for object "HostProfileManager" on vCenter Server "<vcenter server>" failed.

Does anyone have an idea why I am unable to generate these profiles? I've added other standalone hosts (in other datacentres) to test and I am able to generate profiles from those without issue. I tried taking one of the above 3 nodes out of the cluster to generate the profile but I received the same errors as above.

Connect ESXi 4.1 Hosts with dvSwitches to vSphere 5.1 Server

Hi,

I am currently working on upgrading our vSphere 4.1 environment to vSphere 5.1. My environment is as follows:

I have a vSphere 4.1 vCenter Server with ESXi 4.1 Hosts. All of the Hosts use dvSwitches.

I have now built a separate vSphere 5.1 vCenter Server with ESXi 5.1 Hosts. I am again using dvSwitches on the vSphere 5.1 Hosts and have built the dvSwitches as version 5.1.0 dvSwitches. The dvSwitch configuration are identical between the 4.1 vCenter Server and the 5.1 vCenter Server and the hardware configuration is also the same.

My plan for migrating the VM's from the 4.1 environment to the 5.1 environment is to disconnect the 4.1 Hosts from the 4.1 vSphere vCenter Server and then connect the 4.1 Hosts to the 5.1 vSphere vCenter Server. The VM's would remain on the 4.1 Hosts whilst disconnecting from the 4.1 environment and connecting to the 5.1 environment.

My question is how to handle the networking configuration on the 4.1 Hosts when connecting the 4.1 Hosts to the 5.1 vSphere vCenter Server. The ESXi 4.1 Hosts will not be able to use the dvSwitches on the 5.1 vCenter Server as the dvSwitch is version 5.1.0 and therefore not compatible with the 4.1 Hosts.

I've got a couple of ideas which I've not tested yet. Firstly I could create another set of dvSwitches on the 5.1 vCenter Server configured as version 4.1.0 dvSwitches and then connect the 4.1 Hosts. I am not sure however that this would work.

The other idea is to configure vSwiches on the 4.1 Hosts prior to disconnecting from the 4.1 vCenter server and then connect the Hosts to the 5.1 environment. I would then vMotion the VM's to the 5.1 Hosts. This is how I migrated our 3.5 Hosts to 4.1 and worked well. I would rather not do this however as it would mean extra work with configuring vSwitches on the 4.1 Hosts just to transport the VM's over to the 5.1 environment.

Any suggestions on these ideas of ways in which this could be achieved would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Guys,

I am quite interested in finding, how many VM's I can migrate simultaneously in my environment. Though it depends upon VMkernel Bandwidth and I have only 2 nics and that too shared between SC and VMkernel for this purpose. Many Thanks.

Management Network on different VLANs

I am looking for some good reading on if there is any gotchas for setting up your management network on two different VLANs.

This is only for managemnet traffic, and not for vMotion traffic, or FT traffic

This is for a larger environment.  Multiple hosts, multiple clusters, multiple virtual datacenters.

hi guys

Environment: Vmware 5.5

I need to set a user permissions for vmotioning VMs (one cluster 8 hosts).

I found the minimum permissions for Storage vMotion but not for vMotion specifically which is the one I need

any idea which needs to be check in the role to let this user vMotion VMs?

thanks a lot

Space required on vCenter Server for increased statistics level

$

I'm running vCenter Server and it's SQL database on separate VMs.  I've sized my SQL database for statistics level 2.  How big does the virtual hard disk on my vCenter Server need to be to support statistics level 2 for 3000 VMs and 150 physical servers?  I realize the primary impact for disk size is to SQL Server's size requirements not vCenter's since the VCDB database is stored on my SQL Server in this case.  However what, if any size impact is there for increasing your statistics level from 1 to 2 on vCenter Server's virtual disks? (I've already addressed vCPU and vRAM needs and prepped for that, I just need to look at disk space now)

Thanks!

Communication between two VM in two different Esxi Host

I have a little problem and I would like to know if it is possible to do this...

I have two esxi host in two different networks (datacenter OVH) and I would like to communicate a VM from one host to another VM to the second host (One is a domain controller for active directory and the other a secondary server for the domain). The problem is with this servers I cannot add more than one physical NIC and I am not sure if I can do this. If I use distributed switch will it work?

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks!!

Set stateless caching to San disk

I have a question about Auto deploy and stateless caching.

I want to install all servers with auto deploy (which already works with stateless), but now i want to make it a stateless caching envoiroment. I have connected a 5GB SAN lun to the server (and about 40 more :-) ). How do i set the location of the cashing in my host profile.

I looked in the install guide and found this

1 In the vSphere Web Client, create a host profile.

See the Host Profiles documentation.

2 Select the host profile and click Edit Host Profile.

3 Leave the name and description and click Next.

4 Click Advanced Configuration Settings and click the System Image Cache Configuration folder.

5 Click the System Image Cache Configuration icon.

Arguments for first disk By default, the system attempts to replace an existing ESXi installation, and
then attempts to write to the local disk.
You can use the Arguments for first disk field to specify a comma-separated
list of disks to use, in order of preference. You can specify more than one
disk. Use esx for the first disk with ESX installed on it, use model and vendor
information, or specify the name of the vmkernel device driver. For example,
to have the system first look for a disk with the model name ST3120814A,
second for any disk that uses the mptsas driver, and third for the local disk,
specify ST3120814A,mptsas,local as the value of this field.
But as often is the case with the install guide is is not complete, it does not mention SAN disks. Also it give a * at the Arguments for first disk, but there is no help button that can be used (web client scks).

[TSMC] Disconnected from host. Reason: Agent upgrade

We use vCenter Server Appliance (VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.5101-1398493_OVF10.ova) to build our vCenter.

It works fine.

However, today, after I update it to a new version (from the file: VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.10000-1440531-updaterepo.zip),

the hosts are disconnected from vCenter with error message: Disconnected from host. Reason: Agent upgrade.

xx.png

The tasks in each host also shows Upgrade agent fail.

The parameter AgentUpgrade.autoUpgradeAgents is set to TRUE.

I couldn't find any useful thread on internet.

Please help. Thank you!!

vCenter WebClient Installation Failed (SSO registration failed)

Hi Friends,

I am trying to install the first vCenter server in our organization.  vCenter SSO was installed successfully.

When Installing WebClient I'm getting following errors

"SSO registration failed. To remedy this:

- Verify that the certificate file specified in vcsso.properties is valied.

- Varify that the clock in the Single Sign In system and the vCenter Server system are in sync.

- Check the vm_ssoreglog in the system temporary folder for more details on the error.

Search the VMware knowledge base (http://kb.vmware.com) for "Error 29113" for more information"

1. Server Clean-installed  with Windows 2008R2 +all updates

2. Server has fixed IP address and is member of Active Directory Domain

3. Server has manually installed DNS-suffix in IP settings

3. I can resolve FQDN using nslookup

4. I use only letters, numbers and a "_" sign in my password.

5. Server time is correct

6. I use the latest build of vCenter 5.5c (VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.5.0-1476387-20131201). The same issues were with the previous builds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

vDS Health Check - An Academic Discussion

$

Ok, so in digging through all the documentation I can find, and barring my next steps of opening a packet sniffer, I am trying to get a real deep dive on how the vDS Health Check works.  So, the documentation says it uses a Layer2 echo protocol, which is an ICMP ping, to check the VLAN configuration.  So, if this is the case, how does it do this on VM Networks without any VMK ports and IP addresses?  Does it randomly pick from an assigned IP Pool, meaning an IP Pool is required?  Also, since it only checks the next hop, in blade enclosures, how does this actually help since the next hop will be the Virtual Connect (in HP land)?

vSphere 5.5 and Windows vSphere Client

$

I recently did a fresh install of vCenter 5.5, and then upgraded my hosts to 5.5 from 5.0 and moved them into the new vCenter. I have noticed a slight problem with vCenter. I can log into it without any issues using the web client. It logs in the first time I try every time. However, when I try to log into the same vCenter server with the Windows "fat" client, it has problems logging in, and I have to try several (5-10 times or more) before it will finally log in. It gives the following error:

"The vSphere Client could not connect to "<vCenter>". The server '<vCenter>' took too long to respond. (The command has timed out as the remote server is taking too long to respond.)"

I am not sure why the web client logs in without a problem while the Windows client is very hit-and-miss with getting in. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
