My current environment is vSphere 5.1 using windows based vCenter Server the web client, I am doing a POC with the VCSA  5.5 do I need to install 5.5 web client and what exactly does this executable do or it does not make a difference as this is built into VCSA. Have not really found any deep documents concerning the VCSA 5.5. .... Any pointers would be gratefull.

vCenter Storage Monitoring Service initialization fails in vCenters with > 1600 datastores

Have nine 5.1 vCenters all configured similarly.  5 of the 9 have > 1600 datastores and the vcenter storage monitoring service tries to initialize but fails on all of them.  The vCenter Storage Monitoring Service initializes fine on our other 4 vCenters which have < 900 datastores.  Have tried all fixes seen for other issues with SMS.

SMS Log shows:

013-12-16 08:16:37,847 [pool-47-thread-9] ERROR com.vmware.vim.sms.provider.vc.PopulateMultipathingEntityTask  - PopulateMultipathingEntityTask Failed for entity : vm entityRelType : datastore : java.lang.NullPointerException

Appreciate any help.

Converting VHDX to VMDK

Hi Guys,

We are currently backing up our exchange server with the bog standard backup which comes with windows (windows backup), which is saving to the hyper-v vhdx file type, what is the best way to go about converting the file from vhdx to vmdk?

How to clean up a failed Vcenter 5.5 install of a second vCenter server in linked mode

$

Hello,

First, my situation:

I’ve successfully installed the following services on a single box:

vCenter Single Sign-On (Vcenter Single Sign-on for your first vCenter Server)

vSphere Web Client

vCenter Inventory Service

vCenter Server

The first vCenter (SRMVC.test.local) Installed properly.

I then ran the install on the second vCenter server (SRMVCDR.test.local)

vCenter Single Sign-On (vCenter Single Sign-on for an additional vCenter Server with a new site)

vSphere Web Client

vCenter Inventory Service

vCenter Server (linked mode) *Failed*

I ran into an error joining the vCenter in linked mode.  I then attempted to force it which also failed, and the install rolled back.   I believe I am dealing with this issue described in this kb:

Linking two vCenter Servers fails with the error: Error 28039.Setup cannot join vCenter Server to the linked mode group (1026087)

  http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2006850

Now I see a series of issues with the VM which may be the root cause.  When I open server manager there is an error when I try to display roles or features.   The error I’m seeing is:

Unexpected error refreshing  Server Manager:  Element not found (Exception from HRESULT:0x80070490)

To make a very long story short:

I don’t really want to fix the issue on the VM.  I believe there could be an issue with the template I deployed this VM from, and I would just like to blow it  way and redeploy from a new template. The issue is that in previous installs I have had trouble reinstalling a second vCenter after a failed install  because various services have already been registered with the first SSO server.

My question:

How to I fully clean up all the necessary components on the first vCenter server after a failed install of a second vCenter server in linked mode?  I  believe that the second server has registered itself not only with its own SSO server, but also with the first site’s SSO server located on  SRMVC.test.local.  I want to blow all traces of it away so that the environment is pristine, and so that I can use the same name of the second vcenter (VCSRMDR.test.local) when I reinstall.

vCenter disable components !!!

Vcenter 5.5 OS: Windows Server 2008 r2 64bits (installed)

Database: SQL Server 2008 Standard 64 bits (installed)

                  SSO 5.5 - installed successfully

Problem: When installing Web Client 5.5, i input the SSO administrator password in the wizard, and confirm the FQDN is work, click next, the a prompt occurs as below

fail to register SSO.png

ping the vcenter FQDN and ip : ok

nslookup the vcenter by FQDN and reverse lookup ip : ok, can return ip and hostname

I also can access SSO page by https://tpesxc_testvc1.corp.test.com:7444/lookupservice/sdk

Move vCenter database

Hello,

I would like to move a vCenter database from a SQL Server 2008 R2 express to a SQL Server 2008.

I tried to backup the DB on the SQL 2008 R2 express, copy it to the other SQL server, create an empty database on the destination server and then restore the DB.  I had a issue doing this because the versions of both SQL server is not the same.

My question is is it possible to restore a DB from a SQL Server 2008 R2 express to a SQL Server 2008?  If yes, how can I do this?  If not, what are the other options for me?  Is is possible to create an empty database and connect the vCenter on it?

Regards,

VMware vCenter 5.5 SSO certificate file location

Hello all,

I need an extra pair of eyes concerning the VMware vCenter 5.5 SSL
Certificates request for Single Sign-On.

The problem I have is with the creation of the SSO certificate for the Single Sign-On Service.

The command to generate the certificate is simple:
Openssl req –new –nodes –out c:\certs\sso\rui.csr–keyout c:\certs\sso\rui-orig.key –config
c:\certs\sso\sso.cfg

Where are these files coming from?:

\sso\sso.cfg                : copy \openssl\bin\openssl.cfg to sso.cfg

\sso\rui.csr                : I have done a search on the vCenter Server but am not able to find this file!

\sso\rui.csr                : unable to find this file.

\sso\rui-orig.key       : unable to find this file.

It is very clear for the Inventory Service no problem as these files can be found:

\inv\inv.cfg                   : copy \openssl\bin\openssl.cfg to inv.cfg

\inv\rui.csr                   : this file is located at – c:\users\all users\vmware\infrastructure\inventory service\ssl\rui.crt which will be copied to c:\certs\inv\rui.crt

\inv\rui.key                  : this file is located at – c:\users\all users\vmware\infrastructure\inventory service\ssl\rui.key which will be copied to c:\certs\inv\rui-orig.key

To generate the certificate request I run the following command:

Openssl req –new –nodes –out c:\certs\sso\rui.csr–keyout c:\certs\inv\rui-orig.key –config c:\certs\inv\inv.cfg

Convert the key to the proper RSA format:

Openssl rsa –in c:\certs\inv\rui-orig.key –out c:\certs\inv\rui.key

So where can i find the RUI.* files for the Single Sign-On Service?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

What is the deal with the VMware.log files being so big? Is there a way to "shrink" these? Also why are they various log files within the same folder per VM?

Hello!

In different vSphere 5.5 preview articles I heard about management tools, that should be included in vSphere 5.5 GA release. Some weeks ago I successfully upgrade my infrastructure to 5.5 RTM, but can't find SSO troubleshooting and diagnostic mmc toolkit. Where I can find / download it?

Using vSphere Web Client 5.1
Trying to access vcenter 5.1 server

Logged in as admin@system-domain

No vcenter server listed.

Suggested troubleshooting steps:

Verify that the vCenter Server system was registered with the vSphere Web Client's Lookup Service.
Question: How do I verify this?

Logged in using Windows Session Authentication.
(User is a memeber of Administrators with full access to vCenter Server)

Message: Client is not authenticated to VMware Inventory Service.
No vcenter server listed

Question: How do I troubleshoot this?

Thank you.

Can unused vCenter database indexes be removed?

$

I searched the forum and haven't seen this discussed. We are seeing that many indexes on all of our vCenter databases are apparently unused. The indexes have 300-plus million writes (in some cases) but no reads. This seems like a waste of space and an unneeded overhead on the MS SQL server. Can those indexes be removed? vCenter 5.0. MS SQL Server 2008-R2. Thanks in advance!

Examples:

Index:VPXI_VM_RESOURCE_GROUP_ID     Writes=324812477      Reads=0

Index:VPXI_VM_IP_ADDRESS                         Writes=319506727      Reads=0

vCenter server suddenly stops working

Hi all,

Every once in a while (about 2 times a week) vCenter service stops with the following error in event viewer:

Faulting application name: vpxd.exe, version: 5.0.0.29542, time stamp: 0x4f3e030b
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17651, time stamp: 0x4e21213c
Exception code: 0xe06d7363
Fault offset: 0x000000000000cacd
Faulting process id: 0x2508
Faulting application start time: 0x01cd5f03f44df961
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VirtualCenter Server\vpxd.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\KERNELBASE.dll
Report Id: 1795e64c-cc17-11e1-902b-0050568400f6

My DB is Oracle and everything looks good on DB (at least that's what my DBA says).

When it happens, I just start the service and everything works well again.

The vCenter machine has 8GB RAM and 4vCPUs and is a Windows 2008 R2.

Thank for any information,

Razvan Stoica

Hello,

I'm upgrading from VCSA 5.0 to 5.1.

I folled this http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2033990 KB Instructions.

At step 14, after the trust is done I should get a list with all managed Hosts, but all I get is an empty list!

How can I fix this and keep going with the upgrade?

I tried IE8, IE9, IE10, Chrome and Firefox.

When I just click on "Next" I get a "404 - Not Found" error from the Pre-Upgrade Checker.

Please help!

Kind regards,

Alexander

vCenter Appliance syslog rotation

Hi,

In the normal Windows based vCenter, there are options to set log rotation settings for the syslog service to which the ESXi-hosts are logging.

I can't find this option in the vCenter Appliance. Does it do this automatically? Or do I need to do manual scripting for this?

2 clusters in 1 site or 1 cluster in 2 sites

Hi

I am commissioning a new DC, initially I setup the new DC in VC as a new site.  But of course I can't vmotion between the two.

the plan is to have all the connectivity available at both sites, so if a VLAN exists on sate A it will exsit on site B, most of them will be stretched.

I have currently got 2 x 1 G L2 connections, but I going to have 10G dark fibre ring (dc1 -> dc2 -> office -> dc1) . I am looking at about 13-15Km fibre run.

So my VC choices are

Create in VC

a) 1 Site

b) 2 Sites

Cluster A (in DC1) could be in the same site as Cluster B ( in DC2) or they could be in separate sites.

I want

storage and host vmotion and vSphere replication.

I will have 3 nodes in each cluster

and I don't plan on having parts of prod (or any other environment) running split between the 2 sites, but I do want to be able to vmotion them from 1 site to another.

Currently I don't see any problem with with having 1 site and 2 clusters...  But thought i might ask the collective incase I am missing anything
