Running first installation of VCSA 6.7 in VMWare Workstation 14 - left with a blank screen

Setup

  • Closed lab (no internet access)
  • One Physical switch
  • 4 working ESXi VM Hosts
  • One Windows 10 Pro PC - with installed VMWare Workstation 14
  • 2 other Windows 10 Pro PCs
  • All static IP addresses;   No Servers (no active directory), DHCP, Domain Controllers, etc.
  • All VMWare products are currently evaluation licenses.

Note: newbie user...

Description:

So, I've set up a lab environment with ESXi VM Hosts (mix of 6.5 and 6.7), populated with VM guests (Windows 10, FreeNAS, VyOS) - everything works as it should.

I'm trying to incorporate vCenter into the picture:

  • With the VCSA 6.7 DVD (from .iso), tried to install the .ova as a VM in VMW-Workstation 14
  • Entered information in all the configuration sections - Network, SSO, root password, etc., but I skipped the "Upgrade" section.
  • Configured the VCSA as "VSC with embedded PSC", "tiny" sizing option.

When the VCSA VM plays, I see:

  • photon splash screen
  • photon login prompt  (for a few seconds)
  • bunch of log messages
    • sda disk caches messages
    • [OK] DCUI started
    • [OK] DCDI stopped
    • etc...

And then, I get a blank screen with a "_"

I'm able to get the Photon login prompt if I use ALT-F1/ALT-F2  (just like for the ESXi VM Host) but I cannot login using the root/password entered at the VM configuration.

Appreciate any help for troubleshooting this situation.

Thanks!

Clear out unwanted plugins listed in vCenter

We've successfully upgraded out vCenter appliance to 6.7U3a.  As a result, one of the Client Plug-ins has failed.  My manager does not want to reenable this particular plugin, so we are removing it.  I've found and follow the resolution steps in 'Cannot remove or disable unwanted plug-ins from vCenter Server and vCenter Server Appliance (1025360)'; however, when we browse in vCenter to Administration | Solutions | Client Plug-ins, the unwanted plugin is still listed.  I understand that restarting the appliance might remove it, but my question is can we restart one or more of the services - i.e. VMware vCenter Client or VMware vSphere Web Client - from the VAMI without restarting the entire appliance and get the same result?

Thanks for your assistance.

"Internal error occurs during Export of VMware vCenter Authentication Framework" while Upgrade from 6.5 U3 to 6.7 U3

Hello Community:

Reading through websites and community pages for a few days now.

I am trying to upgrade a VCSA 6.5U3 to the latest 6.7U3.

Stage 1 is fine (deploying vCenter Server Appliance with external Platform Services Controller)

But the pre-upgrade checks at stage 2 are failing.

Failed to set a target and start the PSC service。

"Internal error occurs during Export of VMware vCenter Authentication Framework" at 6%

Any hints are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Vcenter Down in HA environment.

I have four ESXI 6.5 Hosts.

I have VCSA  VCSA-Peer and VCSA-Witness

Last night VCSA and VCSA-Peer went down for no apparent reason.

So I just started VCSA the VCSA-Peer but I can not get them to sync or both to be up .   Unable to ping to VCSA

Is there a command or certain order I must start the VCSA up?

Currently I only have console access.

Any ideas or suggestions

Thanks

Update

I found that the network adapter is not set.   I assigned static ip addresses I tried DHCP but the ip address does not stay

I logged onto the VCSA and ran this

ifconfig

/opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_config_net

  Main Menu wiil

Select option for
network adapter,

I set the adapter to the ip address

I now cannot bring up vcenter at all.

Need help thanks

Vcenter Server 6.5d Installation error 1603

I'm doing a fresh install on a Windows 2019 server of Vcenter 6.5d.

The installation keeps failing at the VCSServiceManager with a 1603 error.

I've seen lots of posts on this before with upgrading Vcenter, but not on clean installations.

The last steps I did was start from scratch with a new OS (with .net 3.5), new SQL build and a new Vcenter ISO download, but I'm still getting that 1603 error on VCSServiceManager.

I then installed VCSSServiceManager.msi first, then did the Vcenter installation and that completed "successfully" but not all services were installed and there was no Vcenter web client.

So now I'm back to square one.

I opened a support case and they mentioned it was because of a firewall rule.  I checked, I didn't install any of our antivirus software yet and the Domain/Public/Private Windows firewalls are on disabled.  I'm still working with support, but getting no where as far as a solution goes.

VCSA Syslog Reporting Levels

Is the above thread still relevant for VCSA 6.7? Modify syslog.conf to this:

*.warning;*.error;*.crit;*.alert @192.168.1.1:514;RSYSLOG_SyslogProtocol23Format

I want to only send remote syslog messages of Warning or higher.

Change VM network permission to single VM

Hi,

I followed KB1020934 and point 9 says to assign permission at data centre level.

I want to restrict this to a single VM

in the data center there are many clusters/host and this would allow permission to all which I do not want.

please advice

thanks

一台Vcenter应该占用多少内存?

In order to do some simple experiments on my own computer. I installed a Windows Server 2016 virtual machine on VMware workstations, and then installed an embedded version 6.5 vCenter (built-in database) on it.

Although I haven't taken over any esxi host and started any work, its memory consumption has reached 6G, and the process that consumes a lot of memory is java.exe. Is this normal?

I just started to learn about virtualization. Can anyone answer my questions?

Linked mode port requirements for Firewall?

$

My question is if anyone has a better list of required ports between both vCenter servers?

I had opened the required ports for vCenter 6.7 Linked mode according to a vSphere document with the ports listed below, but I still got a failure when running the domain-repoint command until my colleague opened the firewall completely for testing purposes. I need to know the exact ports. I tried netstat on vCenter but wasn't effective for determining the vc to vc communication during time of installation. You'll notice 2012/2014 isn't in the list as I think that was deprecated in the later vCenters. Any ideas?

vCenter - ad authentication with more than 2 domain controllers

Currently running vSphere 6.0 with plans to go to 6.7 shortly but is it possible to configure LDAP to connect to more than 2 domain controllers for authentication? We recently had an issue where the two domain controllers went down which just happen to be the ones vCenter uses for LDAP connectivity. It seems you can only put a primary & secondary server

Cannot add ESXi 6.7 hosts to cluster: A general system error occurred: Unable to push CA certificates and CRLs to host

$

I completed upgrading our vCenter Server appliance to 6.7U3.  After running into a number of issues doing that, I've finally got everything back normal.  The goal was to add new host hardware we have, which we installed ESXi 6.7 on.  Since we were running VCSA 6.5, I upgraded that to be able to create a new cluster for the new hosts to be managed by the 6.7 VCSA.

I created the new cluster, enabled DRS, enabled HA, then enabled and set EVC to the highest on the list (Intel Merom).  We're using hosts with Intel Xeon Gold 6143 CPUs.  I followed the wizard for adding new hosts, it seemed to connect and identify them with no issues, but when I start the adding by clicking finish, it fails immediately with the following error message:

A general system error occurred: Unable to push CA certificates and CRLs to host <hostname/IP>

I've tried using both the FQDN and IP, but get the same error.  We have not fully licensed these installations yet and they have whatever the default certificate is when you first install ESXi, which we did a few weeks ago.  The vCenter server is using a valid certificate issued by our enterprise CA.  What am I missing?

unsigned ldap requests from vCenter

$

Hi @all,

I already found some threads about the Microsoft changes from ldap to ldaps but they did not yet help me.

Our vCenter is joined to our AD. At the identity sources I have configured the root domain of the forest with "Active Directory (Integrated Windows Authentication)".

When I now look at the ldap logs of the AD Domain Controller I see that the machine account of the vCenter makes unsigned connections.

On my test vCenter I setup an ldaps connection instead of the "Active Directory (Integrated Windows Authentication)" but there is the same behavior.

How can I change them to signed ones?

Regards Wolfgang

Applying custom certificate in vSphere 6.5 using Microsoft CA template fails and rolls back

$

Hello,

When applying a certificate using our Microsoft CA (I followed the VMware article/video on how to create a certiifcate template) to our vCenter (Windows) server, it fails and rolls back. The issue I'm getting is the same as the following discussion posted a few months back. However, there's no fix provided:certificate-manager 'lstool reregister' failed: 1 / VCSA Certificate Manager Option 1: Replace Machine SSL certificate with Custom Certificate

The error in the log:

2017-10-19T00:26:19.474Z ERROR certificate-manager Error while replacing Machine SSL Cert, please see C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\logs\vmca\certificate-manager.log for more information.

2017-10-19T00:26:19.474Z ERROR certificate-manager 'lstool reregister' failed: 1

2017-10-19T00:26:19.476Z INFO certificate-manager Performing rollback of Machine SSL Cert...

Is there an actual fix to this that can be made available instead of me having to call VMware support?

Thanks!

Renew the certificates for our vCenter server using the SSL Certificate automation tool

$

Hi,

I was planning to renew the certificates for our vCenter server using the SSL Certificate automation tool version 5.5 (vCenter 5.5).

I am looking for the answers below.

  • Enter vCenter Server administrator user name:
  • Enter vCenter Server administrator password (will not be echoed):
  • Enter the vCenter Server original database password (will not be echoed):

Questions:

Is the 'vCenter Server administrator' user the Windows Administrator user or the administrator user inside the vCenter service?

Where can i find te 'vCenter Server original database password'?

Perhaps noob questions for some people here but i am already grateful for response.
