Upgrade from 5.5 latest to 6.0U2m using migration assistant fails in pre upgrade checks

Hello

I have two vCenter Servers, Production and Recovery Site, both Windows boxes, apart of same SSO domain, in linked mode and both at the latest build of 5.5. I am trying to upgrade my recovery site first to 6.0U2 using the migration assistant to create an appliance. The upgrade is failing in the pre-upgrade checker with the below errors in the migration-assistant.log:

So I have done my due diligence and replaced the certs on the vCenter (Embedded deployment with external/remote SQL DB) but I am still getting the same error. I can confirm the certificates have been regenerated and applied successfully. Also did a complete uninstall and re-install to no avail.

Thoughts?

VCSA 6.0 U3 / problems logging in with SSH or console

$

Hi,

from one day to another I'm unable to login to our VCSA 6.0 U3 via shell or ssh with root user.

After typing in password and hitting enter there are errors shown briefly before showing the login promt again. An ssh session is being terminated.

"/etc/profile.d/profile.sh: eval: line 26: unexpected EOF while looking for matching '"'

"/etc/profile.d/profile.sh: eval: line 27: syntax error: unexpected end of file

Root-Login to DCUI / VAMi however is possible.

Shell access is currently only possible via an additional management-agent installed on the appliance.

I can get root-access there, but the errors are shown anyway upon login.

What can I do to get this fixed?

Kind regards

Moving VMs from old ESXi/storage to new ESXi/Storage

Hello Experts

Our Old ESXi servers (5.1) have data store connected to old storage with FC (Netapp) and iSCSI (HP 3PAR) storage. The new storage we ordered have only FC cables. (IBM model)

We need to move VMs and storage from old esxi/storage to new esxi/storage.

Do the new storage (IBM) need to have ethernet cables also connected to new ESXi so that ESXi can have access iSCSI based LUNs?

Does the old storage need to be connected to new storage to perform storage vMotion?

Please help.

VCSA 6 install error - Supplied name not valid

When installing a second vCenter I keep running into the errors:

1. Firstboot script execution error.

2. The supplied System Name vcenter-01.domain.local is not valid.

3. If the supplied system name is a FQDN, then make sure the DNS forward lookup results in at least one valid IP address in the system. If the supplied system name is an IP address, then it should be one of the valid IP address(es) in the system.

This is a second vCenter install I am working on. I installed a vCenter 6 appliance with the psc and vCenter in our DR creating creating the vsphere.local (we are installing new hardware and moving from 5.0) just fine. At our Prod site I am running the appliance iso using a newly setup esxi 6 u1 host. I join the SSO site and create a new site name or join the existing, I am using a dvgroup with a Ephemeral port on the dvSwitch. I have triple checked the DNS settings. There is a host and pointer record for the esxi 6 host and appliance, I can run a nslookup from multiple machines with no issues.

Any thoughts as I am stuck.

Is VCSA available with VMWare vSphere Essentials Kit ?

Hi,

As stated in this Blog Post, "vCenter Server for Windows" will be discontinued, and replaced by "vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA)".

https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2017/08/farewell-vcenter-server-windows.html

We currently own the "VMWare vSphere Essentials Kit", and have initially installed "vCenter Server for Windows".

We are wondering if and how our licence allow us to install "vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA)".

Thank you very much for your help

SDRS and making space

$

We've got an SDRS cluster that is around 80TB, made up of 10 datastores - utilization is 48TB, with 31TB free.

Our largest stretch of free space within the cluster is ~6TB

We have a VM that is around 8TB (total of all its VMDKs) that we want to relocate into this SDRS cluster - when we try to move it we get an error about insufficient disk space, since our largest free space block is less than the size of the VM.

We just recently moved to 6.5 and I swear in the past (back in 5.5 days) when we moved VMs larger than our largest free space SDRS would move OTHER VMs around and create more space (so long as there was space in the cluster for this).  Since upgrading to 6.5 it seems like this no longer occurs - if we don't have a large enough stretch of free space we're just SOL, or am I missing something? We have datastores that are 10TB, so we should have plenty of space for this Vm to move into the SDRS cluster if other VMs would move to other datastores.

I can of course resolve this manually, but I'm really wondering why SDRS isn't sorting it out like it used to.

DVUplink VLAN 'Health Issues'

$

I have started digging in to learn more about DVSwitches and how best to use them. I've had one set up in my sandbox for quite some time and it's been operating without issue.

I learned about the 'health check' that vSphere can run on the switches, so I enabled it - but it's not happy with my config at all.

I have a total of six dvUplinks set up for each of my two hosts - One for my LAN traffic, one for iSCSI traffic, one for vMotion and one for a VLAN trunk (two are unused). the only uplink that needs any VLAN capability would be the Trunk one - the other three do not need the capability, and should be untagged.

The attached image is what the health os reporting.

There is nothing functionally wrong with this config - for the trunk, 0 (untagged) being not supported isn't a problem. Same goes for the VLANs for the vMotion, iSCSI and LAN. None of those need, nor should they have, tagged traffic going to them.

The only way I can configure the uplink ports at any level I can find is as 'VLAN Trunking' ports - which trickles down from the DVUplinks group to the uplinks themselves. This option is greyed out, so I can't change it to anything else. This is probably why it's complaining the way it is.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to set the port mode for the uplinks that don't need trunking or tagging to be set that way so that hopefully, the health status will be happy and stop complaining about something that isn't actually an issue?

Can you only install Security patches to vCenter Appliance?

Hi,

I am currently at vcenter 6.0 Update 2a and I cant go to update 3b as yet because of third party tools that isn't compatible with update 3b. Wanting to know to get around this if I can only install the security fixes instead of the full update to 3b?

Thanks

How to migrate the management network from one physical NIC to another on esx host?

$

I have a esx host running 5.5. It's management network is configured on one physical NIC and recently we have patched in additional NIC's. I now need to move the Management network over to one of the new physical NIC's. The current setup is using a standard vSwitch. Is it possible to migrate the management network over to one of new physical NIC's without isolating the host, or is it easier to go back to square one and remove it from vCenter, reconfigure the management network from the service console and re-add it to the vCenter?

Hi All,

it is the 2nd week to dig the internet searching for direct answer to my question,

I need to use esxtop command that can create a CSV file includes per VM, CPU ava, Memory AVA, Network AVA, and how to distinguish which VMs are which WID?

I saw a couple of Powershell commands can do so, but I belive there is a way using esxtop directly

more explanation what I need to get, is something like below

Migrate from vCenter 6.0 to VCSA 6.5

$

Hi,

Would like to bounce a question off of the community. I am testing in my lab and have got to a point where I need validation on what I think is the problem. I am working through the process of upgrading Windows based vCenter 6.0 to VCSA 6.5b.

Current Environment

Windows Server1 - vCenter 6.0 U2 on Windows

Windows Server2 - PSC 6.0 U2 on Windows. This server hosts the SQL Server DB's for vCenter and VUM

Windows Server3 - VUM 6.0 U2 on Windows

Migration Steps

  • In my lab I started the Migration Assistant on the PSC
  • On a separate VM I started the Migration Wizard. I was able to get the PSC appliance deployed and the data migrated.
  • Next step was to start the Migration Assistant on the VUM and vCenter servers. On VUM there was no problem. On vCenter it complained about not being able to connect to vCenter. I took a look at the services and saw that the VMware vCenter service was stopped. I tried starting, but no luck.

I believe the problem is because the PSC Windows server was powered off after the data migration. This server has the SQL Server DB's which is why the vCenter would not start. I powered off and deleted the PSC appliance, reverted my snapshot of the Windows PSC and powered on and everything is back to normal.

Question

Is the option to migrate the DB's to another server or is there an alternative idea(s)?

THanks

what is the difference between Host Profile and ESXi Image Builder?

I'm studying for VCP-DC Exam

what I understand is that Host Profile contains host configurations, while ESXi Image contains the drivers to run that image on a server

is that correct?

VCSA fails to work after reboot

Hi,

Built a new VCSA 6.5. Joined it to the domain, therefore required a reboot. At this point, it doesnt seem to want to work anymore. I can connect to VAMI and the PSC web interface etc, but when i try to connect to the "actual" web client, i get the following:

Looking at the services, they seem to have some stopped, and some in a StartPending state...

If i try to manually start a service, or restart them all, it just takes forever and doesnt seem to actually start them. Therefore i cant get into vCenter. Any ideas how to fix this, and ideally how to prevent it from happening further after a reboot?

Hello Experts,

We have a old storage on Netapp platform (ISCSI/NFS) and new storage on IBM platform (FC)

The plan is decommison  old hosts and old storage also.

We will  add new hosts connect to old storage (iSCSI and NFS) and connect to new storage also (FC)

How do I move VM from iSCSI/NFS procotol to FC protocol LUN?

Please guide.
