Issues logging into Vcenter Server: Error [400]

Hello,

I am new to server management and i bought my first physical server the other day with hopes of running esxi on it and ive had nothing but issues throughout this whole process. My main issue that i am having right now is logging into vCenters Server web client. I am presented with this error every time https://gyazo.com/ff3dbbec26e2d6e78782e88f8dcc6a21 i reload the page. I am no longer even given the choice to  even sign in, it goes straight to the error.

If anyone knows how to go about this and fix this i would greatly appreciate it. I know all of you started with servers at one point in your life and you were all in my shoes, please help a novice learner be able to run a successful software without issues.

Thank you

Aaron

External PSC Replication Partner with more than one PSC

Can an external PSC be installed as a replication partner with an existing embedded PSC that is not replicating with anyone and a replication partner with another external PSC?  We are trying to bring an upgraded environment to where we can vMotion the VMs to a new install of an applicance based environment that is replicating with another site already.

SNMP on VCSA 6.0 (vCenter Server Appliance) not working

On 2 of my 5 VCSA 6.0 appliances, SNMP polls are not working.  VCSA is 6.0 build 2656761 on all.  The non-working ones are using an external PSC (another VCSA) which appears to be the only difference.  Commands I used...

*Community string replaced for this post

Command> snmp.set --communities myCommunityString

Command> snmp.enable

When I use the Windows tool MIB walk with myCommunityString, it fails the test immediately.  It works fine on my other 3 VCSAs.  I have logged into the shell and verified snmpd service is running.

Anyone know what is incorrect?

Plugins in the vCenter 6 appliance

I recently moved from a Windows based vcenter 5.1 install on a physical server to the virtual appliance for 6.0. In the past if I wanted to use a plugin, I'd either install it right on the Windows vcenter server, or on it's own server and connect to vcenter via the install settings. But now that I'm on version 6 and the appliance, I'm not exactly sure how the whole plugin set up works. I found this in the docs about deploying a plugin package, but it was a bit confusing. Any help would be appreciated.

This wasn't even what I started working on to get here. I was looking for documentation on updating Qlogic FC HBA's via command line from vib as I did in earlier versions, but couldn't find much information on it. The one thing I did find was to install the Qlogic vcenter plugin and update them via he GUI, but then I realized I had no idea how to connect a third party plugin to this appliance.

And here I am.

After upgrade to VCSA 6: High cpu load after a few hours?

Hi!

I've upgraded our VCSA appliance from 5.5U2 to 6 and everything seemed to went fine but after it ran about 12 hours, the appliance began to eat up the two vCPUs almost completely, rendering the web client as well as any SOAP interfaces pretty useless:

exported.png

Diagnosing the cause is a little bit difficult for me because even the SSH daemon refuses to accept any connections during those high load periods.

Sometimes I've managed it to get a VIMtop output which was basically telling me that the "CIM health service" is taking up more than 100% cpu time. After this, I've noticed that the health stats for my HP ProLiant G5 (still using an 5.5U2/HP image) were missing when using the web client, although they are still accessible using WBEM directly on the host. Then I've simply deactivated the CIM server on that specific host ... but it didn't help.

When look at VCSA's dmesg output, there are dozens of messages like this one:

IPfilter Dropped: IN=eth OUT= MAC:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff (...) SRC=(varies) DST=255.255.255.255 LEN=68 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=128 ID=26090 PROTO=UDP SPT=58980 DPT=1947 LEN=48
Is this somehow related?

So my question is if anyone has an idea how to troubleshoot this issue in order to track down the root cause?

Time configuration

Hi When configuring Time configuration for the ESXi hosts.

I have entered the NTP server ip addresses.

Under the Tab General - startup policy i can see the three options.

1. Start automatically if any ports are open, and stop when all the ports are closed.

2. Start and stop with host

3. Start and stop manually.

Which option is recommended. If i select first option if my esxi hosts is rebooted still the service will be running.

vCenter Events filter using multiple entities

Hi,

I'm trying to fetch vCenter events using Java SDK. In my vCenter setup, I have a data center and a cluster. There are 'n' number of DVS switches under the data center. New DVS switches may also get created in future.

The requirement is to filter all events under the cluster and all events specific to the available DVS Switches.

We are using createCollectorForEvents method with EventFilterSpec object to filter the events. Is it possible to set multiple entities (Cluster entity or DVS Switches entities) to EventFilterSpec to filter out the events? Are there any other option available to achieve this?

Thanks,

RDM Luns Shows less capacity in SFS partition not the full capacity

Hi,

We have extended the one of the RDM LUN from 740 GB to 1.07 TB. RDM device was presented to Windows VM and the VM is running in vSphere 5.5 Environment.

After extended the LUN from the storage, we rescan the host, added capacity shows in to LUN in capacity but the 740 GB shows in SFS as partition type. Due to this we could not see the available space in Windows. Can you please help me what is SFS partition type and how we can extend this partition to 1.07 TB

ESXI 5.5 Manual Migrations that shouldn't be allowed

$

Good Afternoon,

My question is can I somehow block hosts in one cluster from migrating to hosts / storage in a second cluster when both clusters are managed by the same Vcenter Server

?

Notes

- All clusters managed by one Vcenter Server running the latest version

- DMZ Cluster has different VLAN's configured (3), and has all cluster settings disabled.

- DMZ Servers are using LOCAL hard drives on the servers to store the files.

- Prod Cluster is using a Dell Compellent SAN which is only configured to allow the 4 Dells blade servers in the cluster access to it).

- Prod Cluster has different VLANS than DMZ and does not have any of the same ones the DMZ has, All Cluster settings enabled.

- This only happens when you try to move from the VM from the Host to another Host, If you attempt to select the cluster it errors out, but if you select a host in the prod cluster it passes all the checks.

- The only error that has to be fixed prior to migration, is for the NIC to be removed as the PROD and DMZ clusters have different Vlans.

Here is the situation, We have a DMZ (HA, DRS disabled), cluster with a few hosts (Poweredge R620), now all the VM's on those hosts are running on the servers local storage and do not have access to the SAN which happens to be a Dell Compellent,

Then we have our production cluster that has several dell blades running on an Dell Poweredge M1000e, which is connected to a Dell Compellent SAN (In the SAN, only blade servers in the M1000e have access to the SAN).

DMZ Cluster (HA Disabled, DRS Disabled, EVC Disabled)

Host 1 (Power Edge R620) Different site, Local storage only, 3 VM's)

-VM 1

-VM 2

-VM-3

Host 2 (Power Edge R630) Different site, Local storage only, 4 VM's)

-VM 4   (MOVED TO PROD CLUSTER, HOST 4)

-VM 5

-VM 6

-VM 7

Host 3 (Power Edge R620) Different site, Local storage only, 2 VMs)

-VM 8

-VM 9

Prod Cluster (HA Enabled, DRS Enabled, EVC Enabled)

Host 1 (Slot 1 M1000e M630), Connected to Compellent SCSI San.

-VM 10

-VM 11

Host 2 (Slot 2 M1000e M630), Connected to Compellent SCSI San.

-VM12

Host 3 (Slot 3 M1000e M630), Connected to Compellent SCSI San.

-VM 13

-VM 14

-VM 15

Host 4 (Slot 4 M1000e M630), Connected to Compellent SCSI San.

-VM 16

-VM 17

Today, I noticed someone was able to move a VM from Host 2 in Cluster DMZ (Lets say VM 4), to Host 4 in Prod Cluster, however the DMZ servers are not blades and do not have access to compellent but if they powered off VM 4 in the DMZ, it allows them to migrate it both datastore and host and I am not sure why it is doing this, as no Vmotion IP are set up on the DMZ.

I remember with our older Fibre SAN we had, if the host wasn't added in the san configuration, we would get an error saying the VM did not have access to the destination datastore, which is what we should be getting but we are not (DMZ Servers have 3 Vlans, Prod has around 30 but neither cluster has the same VLANS)

"VMware highly recommends." Version 5.5U3b and earlier version hosts?

$

Hi,

I will shortly be setting up a new Dell server with ESXi. The lowest compatible version it can run is 5.5U3. I have two existing servers running their highest compatible ESXi version which is 4.1U3.

To manage the new server with vCenter Server appliance I have to upgrade the appliance, currently at 5.0, to 5.5U3b.

According to the interoperability matrix this version can also manage the ESXi 4.1 hosts but there is an annotation "VMware highly recommends you update ESXi hosts to 5.5U3b while managing them from vCenter Server 5.5U3b."

What are the implications of this somewhat vague message, will I lose manageability of the older servers? Has anybody run this configuration? Version 5.5U3 is the only version that overlaps in compatibility with the old hardware and the new.

Thanks

vCenter 5.5 U2d memory usage (memleak?)

Hi,

since last week we experience that vpxd.exe is consuming lot of memory (actualy 58GB). Restart of vcenter service solved it for few days, but here it is again:

Any similar experience? We are going to update it to 5.5u3a to see if it persist...

vCenter 6: Lookup Service MOB Repeatedly Prompts For Credentials

$

Hi Everyone,

We have 2 Windows based vCenters in our environment, with the following Windows + vCenter version configuration:

Windows Server 2008 R2 with vCenter 6.0 Update 1 (Embedded PSC Architecture)

Windows Server 2012 (Not R2) with vCenter 6.0 Update 2 (Embedded PSC Architecture)

On both of these vCenter, we've replaced the machine certificated with 3rd party CA signed certificates (in the case of the vCenter 6.0U2, this was done while at version 6.0U1.)

For some reason, when trying to apply fixes with broken SSL trust anchors documented in VMware KB: vCenter Server or Platform Services Controller certificate validation error for external VMware Solutions… , when accessing the lookup service's MOB interface @ https://<vcenter-FQDN>/lookupservice/mob, I'm repeatedly prompted for credentials to login.  I've tried the administrator@vsphere.local account as well as AD integrated accounts that have admin access in SSO.  In both cases these IDs can login to the PSC / vCenter fine, but nothing seems to authenticate with the MOB interface for the lookup service.

On both vCenters as well, if I try to access the PSC web interface via https://<vcenter-FQDN>/psc, I receive an error:

HTTP Status 400 - An error occurred while sending an authentication request to the PSC Single Sign-On server - null

type Status report

message An error occurred while sending an authentication request to the PSC Single Sign-On server - null

description The request sent by the client was syntactically incorrect.

I am confident both symptoms are related, as we have other Windows based vCenters running 6.0 Update 1 where this is not an issue.  However, I've been at a loss to identify the cause of find any logs that correlate to the errors for the PSC web interface or failed authentications to the MOB.

Would greatly appreciate any tips or guidance on how to solve this issue.  Without being able to login to the MOB, we're unable to resolve SSL certificate issues that I described above.  Thanks much in advance!

vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) 6 - root password problems

Hi vSphere community,

We are seeing some odd behavior with the vCSA and the root account's password. Basically the root password is changing or becoming locked out regularly.

We've followed the KB to unlock it and prevent it from expiring.

But after the weekend- for example- the root password that was working Friday no longer works and we have lost access to the shell on our vCSA again.

We are typing a known good password and this is still happening.

Has anyone had this or a similar issue? Any ideas/recommendations?

Thanks!

Permissions in vCenter 6.0 - limiting access to VMs

$

I am trying to set up permissions in vCenter 6.0 by setting up groups and limiting access to folders by groups. These permissions work in the VMs and Templates view, in the Datastores view and Networks view. However, those permissions don't seem to work in the Host and Clusters view.

If I want a user to be able to create a VM, I need to enable propagate on the cluster to allow 'Allocate resources to Virtual Machine'. This, however, opens up ALL of the VMs to the users at the Hosts and Clusters view, even those that they specifically have No Access set under VMs and Templates views. Without the propagate permission, users can't create a VM in the cluster, even though that permission is enabled on each host.

I don't want to use Resource Pools to organize and secure VMs, as that's not the purpose of the the Resource Pools.

Any ideas what I am missing here?

VCSA Install stuck on "Powering On Applicance"

VMware vCenter Server Appliance Deployment has been stuck on "Powering on appliance" for nearly an hour.  Please advise?

  • VMware-VCSA-all-6.0.0-2800571
  • Browser: Chrome Version 44.0.2403.157 m

Update:  After 4 failed attempts on the same host (ESXi-10), I tried the install on another ESXi (ESXi-1) host and installation completed successfully. I'd still like to figure out what caused the Power On to hang with ESXi-10 though. Any ideas as to cause?

vsphere appliance log size

Hi,

How can I limit specific logging in vsphere server appliance?

For instance i have the default /storage/log 10G partition with almost 1G in /storage/log/vmware/vsphere-client/logs/access/.

Those are uncompressed .txt files dating back from almost a year ago.

Shouldn't there be logrotate and compression in place??

I already followed the KB#2143565 and loosened the sso logs. Is there a similar config for vsphere-client logging?

There are also other massive logs:

Run vSphere SDK sample return error "login fault : The server sent HTTP status code 404"

Hi,

I downloaded the vSphere SDK 6.0.0-2561048. And run "run.bat" under SDK\vsphere-ws\java\JAXWS.

command: > run.bat com.vmware.general.GetHostName --url https://[my vcenter IP]/sdk --username [my username] --password [my password].

It returned error:

ERROR: could not connect: login fault : The server sent HTTP status code 404: Not Found

I confirmed that my username and password is correct and have right privilege.

My vCenter is 6.0.0, 3018524.

I tried the same command on another vCenter, it returned the ESXi hosts information.

Can someone tell me what did I miss in the vCenter which returned error?

Thanks!

Cannot Create Content Library

Hi all

I'm running in a strange issue. When trying to create a Content Library through vSphere Web Client, I'm always getting an error that states that The operation failed because "this method requires authentication”. I'm creating a Content Library without marking the authentication checkbox.

Furthermore, the error always pops up no matter what Content Library type I try to create (Local, subscription, etc...)

Anyone has run into similar issue?

Thanks
