unable to log on to web client due to expired certificates :(

Running vCenter 5.5 with full installation. I used KB2096030 to no avail. I've created the certificates using the same template that was successfully used last time the certificates were created, but when I try to use the ssl-updater tool, I get an error about the token service rejecting the certificate when i try to update the single sign on SSL. My thought is that the STS service is rejecting the certificate because it's .jks truststore is expired as well. Unfortunately, I can't replace the .jks file as i'm only able to do that when logged in via the web client.

i've tried re-installing the entire application, but when I try to use the same databse, it fails since the certificates are expired as well.

if anyone has any thoughts I am all ears. I could use a bit of help with this one.

machine(s) keeps crashing

Hi All,

I have a virtual machine that keeps crashing when I move it into a new host (ESXi 5.5.0 build-3343343) I have introduced, its a HP host.

The vmware.log is showing the following  at time of crash:

MONITOR PANIC: vcpu-3:EPT misconfiguration: PA 41f7dc000

2016-02-16T15:20:37.745Z| vcpu-0| I120: Core dump with build build-3343343

2016-02-16T15:20:37.745Z| vcpu-2| I120: Exiting vcpu-2

2016-02-16T15:20:37.745Z| vcpu-0| W110: Writing monitor corefile "/vmfs/volumes/565583c7-773959d9-1f5c-001145666214/win-serv-print/vmmcores.gz"

I found a kb relating to updating the BIOS/Firmware but I have the latest firmware installed.

VMware KB: Virtual machines abruptly shut down with an error similar to: MONITOR PANIC: vcpu-0:EPT misconfiguration

Any Ideas?

vcenter ca cert issuer not matching client cert

I have a vcenter 5.5 appliance I'm running, and I'm trying to use the builtin certificates and have them trusted on my client for the web client access (and xendesktop later on).  I've gotten the .pem file downloaded from the server from /etc/vmware-vsphere-client/SerenityDB/keys/vsphere-client-ca-cert.pem.  Renamed the pen file to a .cer file and imported it into the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store.

When I then go to the website for the vcenter server, it still prompts me with the certificate error.  When I look at the certificate I imported, it shows it's issued by vcenter01-lx.blah.blah CA 62798610.

Screen Shot 2016-02-17 at 4.56.14 PM.png

When I look at the certificate I get from the web browser when I go to the vcenter web page, that certificate says it's issued by vcenter01-lx.blah.blah CA e6ec1cb0.  I'm assuming that's hex, so when I convert that to decimal I get 3874233520 which isn't the same value as the other certificate.

Screen Shot 2016-02-17 at 5.01.24 PM.png

What gives?  Why would this be different?  What can I do to get this ca cert to be trusted on my client?

Thanks!

Upgrade from 5.5 Update 2 to 5.5 Update 3?

I am currently running vCenter 5.5 Update 2 (5.5 Build 2183111), and I need to upgrade to 5.5 Update 03 (to resolve some issues with SAN performance, according to Tech Support); not sure if all my hardware is certified for 6.0, hence the 5.5 U3.

I am in the process of wading through the vCenter Installation and Setup Manual, but I thought I would double check here. If I am not making any changes to my current environment (i.e., no changes to Single SignOn, no changes to the databse, etc), this is pretty much just run setup, and choose the Simple Install (I'm pretty sure that's what I chose last time). Then run the other upgrade components - Update Manager, ESXi Dump Collector, Syslog. And then all the ESXi hosts.

Am I correct that nothing major has changed (in the upgrade process) from 5.5 U2 to 5.5U3? Especially if you use the Simple Install method? It should all Just Work, yes?

Thanks

PSC and multiple vCenters with different licensing?

We are an IaaS provider with our own vCenter installation (VMware Service Provider licensing), and several different customer dedicated vCenter installations (clients have their own VMware licenses and we manage the virtual infrastructures for them).

The management infrastructure is the same for all of them; one single AD for SSO, and internal PKI for certs.

Does the Platform Service Controller license allow us to use one single PSC installation for all of them, or do we need one PSC for each of the vCenter environments?

Changing Modes when upgrading from VC5.5 to VC6

I currently have VCenter 5.5 (3252642) installed at 2 sites. The entire system is on a single server at both sites. I wish to upgrade to Vcenter 6 (ISO 3040890). We will be installing Replicator and SRM and have been told and seen documentation that the recommendation is to use separate Platform Services servers and to have the 2 sites in enhanced linked mode. I need documentation on how get from 5.5 single server to 6.0 with separate Platform Services. I know this cannot be done during the upgrade but can find no documents explaining the process to get where I'm going.

If I upgrade from vCenter 5.5 to 6.0, will there be any changes on the database?

Current vCenter is having an external SQL database since embedded database is not sufficient.

I heard that If you are using an embedded database, it will be converted to postgre type database.

Thanks!

Add an ESXI 5.5 to vCenter 6.0

Hi guys,

I'm currently working on a vdi solution and I consequently need a vCenter (6.0).
I took the evaluation mode and everything was alright until I tried to add my ESXI (5.5) to the vCenter, I had an error message like : "license can't not perform this operation... Plz Upgrade your license."
I looked for a trial version, or a temporary key for vCenter but it seems that this version doesn't need any key... Therefore I didn't find any key or license to be able to add a host.

Help would be very appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Dvs portlinks went down and then up (event DvsPortLinkDownEvent)

Hi All,

Our environment includes vCenter 5.5 U2e and ESXi 5.5 (we also have NSX and vRA).

I see in the LogInsight that many ports in the DVSs went down and up right after it.

I see the event "DvsPortLinkDownEvent" on a particular port and right after it (less then a second later) an "DvsPortLinkUpEvent" event.

It occurs on many different ESXi hosts, 2 different vCenters, many ports and different DVSs.

We also had a problem a few days ago where many VMs got the LinkDown event and to fix it we had to manually change the port group and then revert it back to the original one.

Do you know why this could happen?

Thanks!

Moving Vcenter to DNR Site

Our Vcenter Server is located on a ESXi 6 host outside of the Vmware environment.  I want to move the server to our DNR site, is there a process for doing this?

Vmware is telling me i need to rebuild the box and backup and restore the DB.  But if i have rebuild I may as well just import the hosts/VM again.

Can anyone tell me why I cant change the IP/change DNS to point to the new IP and move the server without having to rebuild??

Unable to choose tiny or small size during appliance vCenter upgrade to 6.0

We are trying to migrate/uograde vcenter appliance from 5.5U3 to 6.0

After resolving the issue with diskspace on the source appliance we ran into an issue with selecting deployment size.

We cannot choose tiny or small. Only choices are medium and large, and since we have 3 host with a total of 30VM's it's quite overkill.

Anyone had this issue and know how to get the tiny deployment option back?

Vcenter 6 "upgrade" path

I've got a Windows/SQL vCenter 5.5.0c server that was upgraded multiple times from very old versions, and even P2V'ed at one point.   I had tried to do an in place upgrade to v6 over the weekend and I ran into some database issues and had to back out.  I think we probably resolved the DB issues, but it got me thinking that I really just would rather be on the Appliance going forward.    I tried the Fling VCSA migration appliance to migrate to the DB, but it just kept hanging at the same place and VPX wouldn't start.   I'm kind of at the point where I'm wondering if starting over fresh on a clean VCSA is the right path.

Browsing some online resources, it seems like migrating to a new vCenter would be as simple as disabling DRS and HA, removing the hosts one at a time and connecting them to the new vCenter.  Is there anything more to it than that?

Our environment is fairly simple:

  • <15 hosts
  • 1 vCenter single server setup
  • no Distributed Switches  (but conversion to dvswitch planned soon)
  • no VDI
  • no vSAN
  • no FT

So I think all of the normal gotchas wouldn't apply to me, right?

Or I guess I could try to give the Windows upgrade another go since I think I solved my DB issues.  Maybe Vmware will release a fully supported and featured VCSA converter with 6.5?

how to find out what sso deployment topology

I currently have 2 physical locations

each location has 4 vcenters and they all have sso installed on them along with vcenter (4 VMs)

when I login to one vcenter, I see all 4 vcenters so they are all in linkd mode.

On the other physical location - same thing, when i login to one vcenter I see all 4.

what kind of sso deployment topology do I have?

the 2 sites does not seem like they can see each other, at least not from linked mode

Full qualified VM names after vCenter 6 restart

Hello Community

after we installed VMware Tools on multiple VMs our VC Server crashed an was not available anymore.

We have restarted the system and now you can connect against it but some of the VMs are not named correctly like:

ds:///vmfs/volumes/12345678-12345678-ABCDE/foobar-it/foobar-it.vmx

instead of:

foobar-it

When you restart the hostd and vpxa service on each host the VMs change their names correctly but this only works until the next vCenter reboot.

Does anyone know this error?

Vcenter server reboot --- Can I just reboot it?

My SAN is working somehow, but I cannot access my vcenter server through.the vsphere client.  I get the error:  An unknown connection error occurred, (The request failed because of a connection failure.  I also cannot connect through veeam.  Everything else seems to be working correctly.  VCenter is a virtual machine in my SAN environment.  Can I simply restart the vcenter server?  Or do I have to shut everything else down before I do this?

Thanks in advance for the help.

vCenter Web Client 6.0 U1B - Users can't see VM performance data.

Our vCenter Server in 6.0.0 U1b and it's a Windows 2012 Server.

My problem is, the VM admins have access to their VM's but when they go to look at the performance charts they get the message...

"Permission to perform this operation was denied.

You do not hold privilege "System > Read" on folder vcenter-server-name"

They have the ability to power on/off their VM and they show up in thier list.

Any ideas?

Thanks
