vm storage vmotion

guys,

I need to storage vmotion a machine, from old storage to new storage, I have done storage vmotion on other machines but this one i'm a bit concern as the vmdk are thick and the old datastore has only 2GB left of space, if I start the migration process, will having so little space be an issue?

thanks

Installation of component VCSServiceManager failed for vCenter 6.0

Hi experts,

I tried to install vCenter 6.0, and got the following error:

  • Installation of component VCSServiceManager failed with error code '1603'. Check the logs for more details.

Checked the release notes, ipv4 stack is all fine.

I tried a couple of times, couldn't overcome this. Also tried to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0, failed with the same error.

How can I overcome this?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Forget to mention: I am installing this on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

Vcentre user permissions -> Cloning and datastores

Hi Everyone,

Is there a way to assign permissions to a user who has access to a vcentre so that they can only clone VMs that reside one resource pool? On top of that, restrict them to one particular datastore?

Any help would be appreciated

Vcenter 6 Services failing to start on boot

Physical Server 2012R2 VCenter 6 server was cleanly shutdown for some hardware maintenance and booted up fine afterwards.

During shutdown this event was logged in the Application log:

The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Initiating VMware VirtualCenter shutdown

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

After boot most of the Vcenter services had not started, nor could they be manually started.  I traced it back to the first failure logged in the System log:

The VMware HTTP Reverse Proxy service terminated with the following service-specific error:

Incorrect function.

I cannot start this service manually it fails with the same error.  All other services fail with a dependancy error.

This is extremely frustrating because we upgraded this server from Server 2008R2 for the same reason, Services would fail to start.  When it had Server 2008R2 its was running 5.1, we tried upgrading to 6 but it failed and we could not resolve it, so we completely removed Vcenter and tried a fresh install, this failed until I managed to "trick" the installer by altering the VMware vCenter workflow manager service to run as local system otherwise it always failed.  So we got it installed and running, then after the first reboot just failed to start the services!!!  So we fresh installed Windows 2012R2, installed VCenter without any AV or other "cruft" to ensure it would work, which it did.  Now the darn thing just fails like this again!

DNS is functiong fine and the server has survived a number of restarts yesterday, No idea why it would just fail now!

Design Input on vSphere 6 and Platform Services Controller

$

Hello All,

I'm hoping to get some design input on a new platform being built.

Background;

Dual datacentre design, roughly 15m / 20km apart with dark fibre connectivity for; backups, storage replication and layer 2 stretched VLANs.

One datacentre is a brand new greenfield deployment, the other is an existing environment.

All systems being deployed are new, so standing up something separate and different from the existing vSphere platforms.

Utilizing high dense blade infrastructure for 95% of the environment, some rack servers for specific use purposes including a management cluster.

vCenter solution deployed in both sites in an active/active configuration.

vCenter SRM incorporated to provide fail over for solutions not clustered at the application layer and/or not making use of Microsoft clustering.

vCenter View deployment for 1000 seats of VDI, active both sides.

SQL 2012 and 2008 clustered solutions, 2012 is virtual and utilizes a dedicated high performance ESXi cluster, 2008 uses physical blades. SQL 2008 is designed this way for licensing purposes, avoidance of HyperThreading issues/support and to avoid RDMs which my client as a strong preference not to use for support reasons.

Cisco Nexus 9Ks operating in 7K mode for Access, Distribution and Core networking all running at 40Gb.

Storage platform providing both block and file services (NAS front end for the SAN) in both sites, fully capable of replication for the SAN and NAS.

Management cluster in each site utilizing 3 x 2U rack servers with a ton of local disk and utilizing VMware vSAN to create the shared storage they will run on. Not interested in presenting SAN or NAS storage to the management cluster as a datacentre cold start means core management functionality cannot be restored until the SAN comes back online. Yes we have had this issue a couple of times now, no we shouldn't have to have that experience ever, nevertheless I'm designing against it. SQL services for management solutions will have a dedicated clustered SQL 2012 solution running on the management cluster, separate from the general purpose application SQL 2008 and 2012 solutions.

Okay enough background. My question relates to the design and implementation of a highly available PSC component for the environment. When I look at the following blog I feel like I'm missing some key points;

Platform Services Controller | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

We would rather not have to use MSCS to make vCenter highly available at the application layer, not least of which we don't know how to would provide RDMs from the vSAN in order to get this working. Are there other alternatives or design considerations we are not seeing? Can I make vCenter work on top of MSCS on top of a management cluster utilizing vSAN without presenting storage from the SAN or NAS? Should I switch to a NAS device under the rack servers to present the shared storage? This would be hard to achieve btw because of support issues (currently outsourced bau support for storage

So if we go with the assumption that we won't put vCenter on top of MSCS how does the rest of the design stack up? Do we just use the "Multiple Site vCenter Server and PSC basic Architecture" and if so what happens if the single PSC in site A dies? Will the systems in site A automatically switch to using the PSC in site B and if so, why would we need two PSCs behind a loadbalancer? What problem is VMware solving there? I can only assume at this point in time that if the local PSC goes down then the vCenter environment and all it's components go offline or become unusable as well.

Any ideas, comments and/or input is most welcome.

Regards,

Paul

VM Reboot Alarm

We know there are a million up/down notification applications out there, but we are looking to make use of VMware alarms to notify on VM reboots. Any reboots. Windows updates, bluescreens, help desk staff, etc..

I understand the standard reboot alarms built-in to VMware are only for reboots initiated through the client, so I am wondering if anyone has created a good custom alarm?

We currently use a custom alarm that looks for a missing heartbeat AND network usage for a VM under 1 kbps for 30 seconds. This works OK, but it is sketchy.

A number of things like backup stuns give us false alarms.

I noticed this post, which seems to be a similar question, but there are no replies;

VM Reboot Alarm

We are running 5.5 U2.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

vCenter Crash and Burn - DVS Problem

I had a vCenter 5.5 box crash and burn.  There were no backups of the database, and for all intents and purposes, that vCenter's data is gone.  I have built a new vCenter, and re-added the hosts.  I have everything back up and running with exception of managing the existing distributed virtual switch.  I've moved all of the VM's over to standard virtual switches, but can't remove the vmkernel adapters of each host from the dVs, over to a standard switch.  Is it possible to get the old dVs over to a manageable state, or am I out of luck here? (move vm's to other host, rebuild host)

I installed and was using vcenter 6 with the PostgreSQL database.

the vcenter was working fine for 2 weeks then I installed vmview composer on the server and also installed MS SQL client.

now many of the services on the vcenter server aren't working.

Ive uninstalled the vmview composer and the sql client and the services are still not starting.

I can find no articles to repair the vcenter installation.

does anyone know the best way to resolve this.

i could try and backup the database but have all the certificates to consider.

cheers Mike

Does anyone have a clue why vmware have a 5.8 version of vSphere when it seems on the outside at least to combine a mix of 5.5 and 5.8 products?

2008 R2 Customization Specification - NIC Settings Issue

$

I have a powershell script that works just fine if you run it manually, but when I add in a batch file that calls the powershell script within the "run once" section of the Customization Specification, the NIC settings don't get applied.

The powershell script will do basic things like rename the adapter, uncheck LMHOSTS, etc.

The issue appears to be with the "run once" script executing before sysprep finishes, causing the NIC settings to get reset by sysprep.

How do other people handle things like this?

Replacement VM creation fails

Have an issue with a newly deployed VCSA 6 where we cannot delete and recreate VMs with the same name. If we have a VM named Test01 and we delete the VM (either through removing the files or leaving them), it is removed from the vSphere Web Client. However, when we create a new VM named Test01, we receive the error "Invalid operation for device 0.".

We reboot the VCSA, and everything works fine. But, we cannot reboot the VCSA every time we want to replace a VM.

Anyone else experience this? Anyone have any ideas?

Connectivity issues to hosts over MPLS

$

Hello,

We have been troubleshooting an issue that prevents our vCenter server from connecting to some of our remote hosts. This has impacted 2 different vCenter servers running 5.1 and 5.5 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.

Process leading to the error

  • We are able to add hosts to a data center after a host reboot or fresh vCenter install
  • If our primary data center MPLS goes down (maintenance or otherwise) we lose connectivity to all remote hosts
  • One data center is able to reconnect without issue. This particular data center is our secondary data center
  • No other remote sites are able to reconnect

Troubleshooting

  • Disabled IPv6 across VMware infrastructure (Windows Servers, ESXi hosts)
  • Increased handshakeTimeoutMs to 120000
  • Restarted management network
  • Cleared ARP table
  • Lockdown mode is disabled

Notes

  • We have a single ESX 4.1 host that is able to reconnect without issue (has only experienced one disconnect, but came back without issue unlike the 5.5 counterpart)
  • We're able to connect to the hosts via vSphere console and SSH without issue
  • The network team is troubleshooting the issue as well, but we've not been able to rule out VMware as the culprit

How To: Move from Vcenter 5.5 on physical box to 6.0 on a VM with different OS?

$

I've read so many KB's my eyes are popping out, and talked to support twice. (But since its tech support, they're hesitant to give "design" advice, which I understand.)

So, please help me think thru this:

I currently have vcenter 5.5 on a physical server, running Server 2008R2, using the vcenter default "built in" SQL db.

  • I want to upgrade to vcenter 6.0
  • While I'm at it, I want to move it to a VM
  • And I want to run Server 2012R2

What is the upgrade path? Seems simple on the surface, but in practice I've not found a way to make it work. I have a few choices, none of which actually seem to work. Is there a way?

One Method: Spin up new 2012R2 VM - Copy the v5.5 DB from physical server to the new VM - Install vcenter server 5.5 on new VM - use the copied DB - migrate hosts to new VM - make sure all is running well - upgrade new VM to 6.0.

Problem with this method, from kb5850444: "If you are migrating a vCenter Server 4.x/5.x database, you must also migrate the ADAM database. You can migrate this database if the Windows versions in the source and the destination is the same. If not, vCenter Server might not operate properly and/or the client might fail during connection."

Another Method: Upgrade physical box to 6.0 - spin up new 2012R2 VM - move vcenter install from physical box to new VM

Problem with this method: no documentation yet on moving 6.0 to a new host with a different OS

Another Method: Fresh install of 6.0 on new 2012R2 VM – connect hosts to new install

Problem with this method: dvswitches don’t migrate to 6.0; have to manually create on new install and nobody knows if that will break connectivity of my currently running vm’s.

Suggestions on the correct way to accomplish this?

VM running on the host Shows Unprotected in Cluster Summary as Host gets disconnected from Vcenter.

$

I have a scenario.

I have read that when a host disconnects from Vcenter the Vcenter instructs master HA agent to unprotect virtual machines running on the disconnected host.

1) I tried to test it. I stopped hostd service on host.  The host got disconnected from vCenter. However the virtual Machines running on the host remained still protected and when I rebooted the host it restarted successfully on another host as per HA.

2) Scenario Second: I stopped hostd service on host.  The host got disconnected from vCenter. I tried to manually connect Host to vcenter(it failed which was obvious). But this time the virtual machine running on this host went unprotected and when I rebooted the host it got powered off on the same host.

Can anyone please help me know that why virtual machine does not gets unprotected in first case (as per concept it should) and why it gets unprotected in second case.
